Burnaby, B.C. Freshman quarterback Greg Bowcott (Abbotsford, B.C.) was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after his performance in SFU’s 18-15 loss to Dixie State College on Saturday.

Here is the official release from the GNAC:

GNAC PLAYERS-OF-THE-WEEK: Offense – Greg Bowcott, Simon Fraser (QB, 6-4, 216, Fr., Abbotsford, BC Rick Hansen) had a remarkable collegiate debut, directing a Clan offense that gained 504 yards, 162 more than its season average prior to the game. Bowcott completed 16 of 36 passes for 233 yards and also ran for a touchdown. With just 1:06 remaining, he led SFU from its own 20 to Dixie States 19 completing passes of 23, 30 and 13 yards before the time remaining forced a field goal try on second down. The three-point try was blocked by Dixies Danny Hawkins to end the storybook finish for the freshman. Defense Caleb Singleton, Western Oregon (DB, 6-4, 215, Sr., Salem, OR West Salem) had 16 tackles, one shy of the conference-season best of 17, to lead the Wolves to a 38-17 win over Azusa Pacific. Among his tackles was one for a one-yard loss. He also had his league-leading sixth interception of the season with 2:10 remaining to set up the clinching touchdown. Special Teams Lucas Gonsalves, Western Oregon (WR, 5-9, 175, Fr., Kailua, HI St. Louis) and Dominique Gaisie, Central Washington (DB, 5-9, 160, Jr., West Covina, CA Bishop Amat & Utah State) had two of the three highest return yardage performances in GNAC history. Gonsalves had 210 yards, including 98 on five punts and 112 on two kickoffs to break the GNAC record of 208 set by WOU’s Tyler Knudsen against Linfield in 2004. Gaisie had 188 return yards, including a GNAC season-high 108 in seven punts and 80 on three kickoffs. His total now ranks third in GNAC history.

OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Simon Fraser had three offensive performances worthy of Player-of-the-Week consideration. In addition to Bowcott, running back Bo Palmer rushed for 194 yards on 20 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown with 24 seconds left in the second quarter to give SFU a 15-10 halftime lead. Wide receiver Mathis Baumbach caught seven passes for a GNAC season-high 164 receiving yards. . .Dixie State running back Sione Tapuosi had 112 yards on 20 carries and Western Oregon RB Adryan Allen had 108 on 20 totes and also scored twice in leading their teams to home victories. They are the eighth and ninth different backs to rush for 100 or more yards this season.

AROUND THE GNAC: Western Oregon had 331 return yards, 157 on three kickoffs, 98 on five punts and 76 on three interceptions. As a result, the Wolves started 11 of their 16 possessions in Azusa Pacific territory and two more past their own 45. . .Gaisie had returns of 20, 17 and 12 yards prior to consecutive first-half touchdown drives of 63, 75 and 65 as Central Washington jumped to a 20-0 lead against Humboldt State. He currently ranks second in the GNAC in both punt returns (10.4) and kickoff returns (22.4). Gonsalves is the conference punt return leader averaging 12 yards per attempt. . .Singleton is the GNAC leader in tackles among DBs averaging 7 per game. He ranks eighth overall, trailing seven linebackers.
