SFU Football training camp opens August 11

Burnaby, B.C. ā€“ Perhaps it is only fitting that the first NCAA training camp of Dave Johnsonā€™s four-year tenure at the helm of the Simon Fraser University Clan is also one of the largest and will feature position battles at every turn. Simon Fraser opens their training camp doors on August 11, with 108 student-athletes taking to the field for their first practice on August 12, at 1pm.

ā€œItā€™s a great time of year,ā€ said Johnson of his fourth training camp. ā€œWe have a number of returning guys, but our incoming class is outstanding and I am excited about the competition and to see how everything shakes out during camp.ā€
SFU will be moving back to four-down football after playing eight seasons of Canadian rules following the Clanā€™s move to the CIS in 2002. SFU had previously played under American rules during their 37-year NAIA run from 1965 until 2001. Johnson says the key to a successful transition is in the details.
ā€œIā€™ve never been about watching the scoreboard, Iā€™m a firm believer in focusing on the process, and having success within the process leads to positive results on the field,ā€ added Johnson. ā€œTherefore, the focus of training camp is on those little things; making sure that each player understands their assignments, making sure that the locker room is a healthy place and that we are building camaraderie from day one. If we can do those things, we will have success.ā€
Practice from August 12, until August 15, will be from 1-4 pm (approximately) each day, while two-a-days begin on August 16, with practice running from 11-2 pm and 6-9 pm (times subject to change).
SFU will revert to their weekly in season practice schedule on August 29, in preparation for their first official Great Northwest Athletic Conference game, which will take place at home on September 4, at 4 pm, against Western Oregon.
