Sherbrooke dims Homecoming party at McGill (stats & video)


MONTREAL – Simon Charbonneau-Campeau (picture) of St. Jean, Que., registered a school record 223 yards on nine receptions, including a 78-yard TD bomb as Sherbrooke dumped McGill 34-8 before 1,512 football Homecoming fans at Molson Stadium, Saturday.

The Vert & Or improved to 2-3, while the Redmen dropped to 0-5.
Sherbrooke, which generated 408 net yards of offence, compared to 343 by McGill, led 8-0 after the opening quarter, 24-3 at halftime and 26-8 after three quarters.
Place-kicker William Dion added 13 points, including field-goals from distances of 38, 22 and 31 yards, respectively.
Sherbrooke quarterback J.P. Shoiry was good on seven of 10 passing attempts for 190 yards and one TD before going down with an apparent ankle injury late in the second quarter. James Goulet, his understudy, was good on 8 of 17 attempts for 105 yards. he also rushed three times for sevn yards, including a TD early in the fourh quarter, which gave Sherbrooke a commanding 33-8 lead.
Among the few bright lights for the Redmen was running back Taylor Kuprowski, who rushed 12 times for 89 yards and caught four passes for 47 yards. Also, receiver Charles-Antoine Sinotte snared eight passes for 73 yards, improving his CIS record total to 238 career receptions.
Redmen quarterback Ryne Bondy was 24-for-46 passing for 267 yards but was picked off twice.
Sherbrooke will host Bishop’s (3-1) next Friday, while the Redmen travel across town to Concordia (2-2), Saturday.
GAME NOTES: McGill and Sherbrooke are now 5-5 lifetime against each other… McGill’s 1960 football team was honoured at the game. They were celebrating the 50th anniversaru of their championship season which feature Yates Cup and Chuchill Bowl titles, then considered to be an unofficial national title. That squad, coached by Bruce Coulter, began the season with an ominous 0-3 start but bounced back to win consecutive contests, to finish with a 6-3 record overall, outscoring their opponents 255-127. They captured McGill’s first Yates Cup in 22 years, winning a sudden-death playoff at Queen’s by a 21-0 score in front of 8,000 fans. The Redmen then won the unofficial Canadian intercollegiate championship with a lopsided 46-7 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears for the Churchill Bowl before 9,200 fans at Molson Stadium.
