Sherbrooke’s Dion looks for record-setting field goal

OTTAWA (CIS) – After tying the CIS record for most career field goals last weekend, University of Sherbrooke kicker William Dion will have a chance to take sole possession of the national mark on Saturday when the Vert & Or travel to Montreal to face the Concordia Stingers.

Dion, a fifth-year senior from Drummondville, Que., has been closing in on the landmark for a number of weeks now but after splitting the uprights five times in his first two games of the season, he has been held to a single field goal in each of his past three outings. He finally kicked his 71st career field goal last Saturday against Laval – a short 13-yarder – to tie the standard set in 2010 by former Calgary all-Canadian Aaron Ifield (2006-2010).
Dion is also second in scoring among active CIS players with 320 career points, which is good for ninth place all-time. The active leader is Matthew Falvo of the Ottawa Gee-Gees, who is tied for seventh on the CIS list with 324 points. Falvo is tied for sixth in career field goals with 65.
Tomorrow’s duel between Sherbrooke and Concordia gets under way at 1 p.m., live on Radio-Canada. Ottawa visits Toronto, also at 1 p.m.
Other players to keep an eye on this weekend include:

– Β  Receiving: Windsor’s Jordan Brescacin is the CIS active leader for career receptions with 170 (11th all-time), receiving yards with 2,593 (16th) and touchdown catches with 21 (15th). Windsor hosts No. 5 Queen’s on Saturday night.

– Β  Punt returns: Saint Mary’s Jahmeek Taylor needs 37 punt return yards to get to 2,000 for his career, a standard reached by only three CIS players over the years. Saint Mary’s hosts Mount Allison on Friday evening.
