Sherbrooke’s Dion, Saskatchewan’s McCall hoping for record performances

OTTAWA (CIS) – A pair of national career records could fall on the fourth weekend of the CIS football season, one that was set only two years ago, and another that has now stood for almost four decades.

Saskatchewan’s Bryce McCall will get the first crack at rewriting the CIS record book when the No. 7-ranked Huskies host No. 9 Regina Friday at 7 p.m. Central Time at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon (live on Shaw TV).

McCall, a fifth-year defensive back, enters tonight’s contest with 20 career interceptions, one shy of the all-time mark set in 1974 by both Saskatchewan’s Bob Coffin (1970-74) and Queen’s Peter McNabb (1970-72 Toronto, 1973-74 Queen’s), and tied in 2008 by Western’s Matt Carapella (2004-08). So far this season, McCall, who hails from Regina, has one interception in three games.

Meanwhile in the RSEQ conference, Sherbrooke kicker William Dion will also look to make CIS history when the No. 10 Vert & Or visit No. 3 Montreal Saturday at 1 p.m. ET at CEPSUM Stadium (live on Radio-Canada).

Dion, also in his fifth and final year of eligibility, goes into the duel with 69 career field goals, two behind the national standard established in 2010 by Calgary’s Aaron Ifield (2006-10). Dion, a native of Drummondville, Que., has split the uprights six times in eight attempts this fall, including a three-field goal performance against McGill on Sept. 7.

Other players to keep an eye on this weekend include:

Rushing: Montreal’s Rotrand SenΓ© needs 38 rushing yards to become the 32nd player in CIS history to reach the 3,000 plateau;

Receiving: Windsor’s Jordan Brescacin needs three catches to join 23 other CIS players who had at least 150 career receptions;

Passing: UBC’s Billy Greene is 105 yards away from becoming the 20th CIS quarterback to pass for 7,500 yards, while McMaster’s Kyle Quinlan needs one touchdown pass to join 27 other pivots with at least 50 career TD strikes. A week ago, Greene became the 14th CIS player to complete 1,000 passes over his career (1,006);

Punt returns: Saint Mary’s Jahmeek Taylor needs 104 punt return yards to get to 2,000 for his career, a standard reached by only three CIS players over the years.
