But it was done in a way that is the rarest of rarities: a scoreless tie in a football game.
So what was this, a game where the defenses were stellar and stole the show, or one in which the offenses sputtered and spurted and just couldn’t get things going? Well, it depends on your point of view, and in truth it was probably a combination of both things. From the Wolverines standpoint, there is no doubt that they were thrilled with their defensive performance, limiting the Shock to less than 100 yards of total offense; but they were frustrated by their offense’s inability to score, in spite of moving the ball at times and putting enough yardage up to at least put a few points on the board.
The tone of this game was established early when the Wolverines put the starting Shock quarterback out of the game on the first play (a factor which may well have had an effect on that team’s anemic offensive performance) and when, later in the quarter aided by a couple of untimely penalties and a well-executed Shock fake punt, stopped the Shock four times from the one-yard line. From that point on, neither team really seemed a threat to score until late in the game when the Wolverines had the ball deep in Shock territory and appeared poised to just kick the ball through the endzone for the 1-0 win until stymied by an untimely fumble.
What few offensive highlights that there were were led by running back Kurt Maltby, who rushed for 72 yards on 11 carries. Alex Wilander also had a good day carrying the ball 12 times for 51 yards. Six other Wolverines had gains on the ground as well. The Wolverines only completed a single pass for nine yards.
Defense was the real story. Sam Morgan led the squad with seven tackes, closely followed by Zach Willis with six and Mackenzie Kazakawich, Luke Zenke and Shawn Best with five apiece. The defense limited the Schock to 65 yards rushing on the day and 80 total.
Next up will be the Leduc StrayCats. Leduc pummelled the Eagles in the game immediately before ours, and the Wolverines are going to have to find a way to put some points on the board for this one. Game time at Clarke on Tuesday evening is 6:00 PM.
WolveriNews — Jeremy Kerr was sporadic, as he has been bothered with a “lower body injury” for some weeks not. Maltby filled in at quarterback for a significant portion of the game and performed well … The defensive backfield played well, limiting the Shock to only one completion on six attempts; three of the passes were knocked down … The game against the Seahawks that was postponed due to weather has not yet been re-scheduled … stay tuned. –The Webguy
