SHRUM BOWL: UBC Thunderbirds partner with BC Football Hall of Fame

VANCOUVER – When the UBC Thunderbirds and SFU Clan take to the field for Shrum Bowl XXXIII on October 8, 2010 at Thunderbird Stadium not only will the rivalry between these two long-time foes continue but UBC’s support of the BC Football Hall of Fame will also be on display.

As was the case when UBC last hosted the Shrum Bowl in 2008, 10 percent of all tickets sales from this year’s rivalry game will be donated to the BC Football Hall of Fame. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased online at Ticketmaster in advance of the game.

A brainchild of Bob Ackles and a project he was developing at the time of his death in 2008, the BC Football Hall of Fame serves to enshrine the history of the sport in the province and is just one of many lasting imprints Ackles has made on football in British Columbia.

A long-time supporter of university football, Ackles established an endowment in 1995 that helps support both the UBC Thunderbirds and SFU Clan through the availability of scholarships for student-athletes at both institutions.

This season’s Shrum Bowl also has added significance following SFU’s departure from CIS to NCAA Division II. Similar to years gone past when SFU was a member of the NAIA, this contest has persisted despite the school’s different organizational allegiances. This year’s game will be played using CIS rules as UBC is the host institution.

Both squads are in the early stages of new eras of football – the T-Birds under the guidance of first-year head coach Shawn Olson while SFU’s Dave Johnson is leading his program through their first season in the NCAA with a new and expanded staff.

With wins in each of the last two years, SFU holds a slim 16-15-1 all-time Shrum Bowl series lead.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
