Shutdown Shockers style

MFL: Β Championship game set, All-Stars and Award Winners announced

The Halifax Shockers and Saint Wanderers have advanced to the championship final for the second year in a row, after breezing by their opponents this past weekend in Maritime Football League (MFL) semifinal action.

In the first semifinal, the Wanderers did what they were supposed to do by defeating the Moncton Mustangs 45-7 to earn their spot in the final.

However, the surprise of the weekend came courtesy of the Shockers as they upset the PEI Privateers 21-0 in the other semifinal. Β The Shockers were successful in shutting down an offense that consisted of the league’s major award winners including Β Most Outstanding Player quarterback Chris Mutch, Most Outstanding Offensive Player receiver Dave Clark, Most Outstanding Receiver Jeff Hillier and Coach of the Year, Vern McIntyre.

Offensively the Shockers controlled the ball. Normally, 21 points would not be enough to beat the Privateers but the Shockers defense, led by linebacker Paul Moore showed up on this day.

With this win, the Shockers will now have the opportunity to successfully defend their championship from a year ago in a rematch of last year’s McIntyre Cup.

Kickoff is at 4 pm this Saturday at Usher Miller Field in Saint John.
