Smithville recruit chooses Laurier as future home

Smithville defensive end recently commits to OUA team’s 2015 class.

The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks have announced the signing of Jake Richardson to the football program.

Richardson, the 6’3, 215 pound defensive end from Smithville, Ontario will join the team for the 2015 OUA season.

β€œWe are excited to add Jake to our defensive line,” commented Golden Hawks Head Coach Michael Faulds.Β  β€œHe is a hard working player who never left the field with the Niagara Storm in the summer.” β€œCoach V [Ron VanMoerkerke] and the rest of our defensive staff are anxious to work with Jake.”

Recently, the defensive end suited up for the Blessed Trinity Thunder of the Niagara Region High School Athletic Association (NRHSAA).Β  Richardson was named Defensive End of the Year and has been selected as an β€˜AAAA’ All-Star twice.

His gridiron journey began at the age of eight in the Niagara Region Minor Football Association (NRMFA).Β  He has also played for the Niagara Storm of the Ontario Football Conference (OFC).

After visiting several schools, Richardson felt that the Waterloo, Ontario campus was the perfect fit for him academically as well as for him to develop into an elite gridiron player.

β€œThe Business Program there is one,” explained the Ontario defensive end of his decision.Β  β€œCoach [Dwayne] Cameron set up at meeting with one of the professors and I was able to find out all of the advantages to what they have to offer.”

β€œCoach also took the time to spend with my family and me showing us the campus and everything that Laurier has to offer. Coach Faulds and the staff have been building a great football program and I felt that it was the best option for me. It is a true family atmosphere and the coaches made me feel that Laurier will be a great home for the next four years.”
