SMU Huskies HC is ‘a good leader,’ says commit

Huskies add an out-of-province commit to their Class of 2018.

Kai Sommerville, a defensive lineman from the Langley Stampeders (Vancouver Mainland Football League), has only been playing the sport for two years. It was long enough, however, to catch the interest of his new team, the Saint Mary’s University Huskies.

Originally from Essex, England, American football probably wasn’t on Sommerville’s radar until he moved to British Columbia. After a short stint on the west coast, he will be making the cross-country trek to get a taste of the Maritimes.

“I committed to SMU because I like how the team is run and I respect Head Coach Colzie as a good leader and I can’t wait to be taught by him for the next four years,” Sommerville said. “The coaching staff is really nice and helpful and have made the recruiting season easy for me.”

Sommerville, who is interested in business, has played for only two teams, the Chilliwack Giants (Valley Community Football League) and the Langley Stampeders. Last season, his team captured a BC provincial championship.

The hulking 6’4, 300lbs lineman has come a long way in his short career. But, he has had some help along the way. He said, “I just want to thank my family and friends for leading me in the right path.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
