SMU players suspended from team following inappropriate tweets

Saint Mary’s University football players who tweeted messages of hate, racism, and sexism, will be suspended from the team immediately. The University is investigating offensive tweets from the past several months that seem to originate from varsity football players, following an online news article published today.

β€œThe comments posted by these individuals are completely inappropriate and unacceptable,” said Dr. David Gauthier, Vice-President Academic and Research. β€œThey are inconsistent with our university values and with what we have committed to address as recommendations from the President’s Council Report.”

The players will be suspended once it is confirmed they are the authors of the offensive social media posts. Further disciplinary action may be taken following an investigation.

In December, the University endorsed a report from an independent council that contains 20 recommendations on cultural changes to prevent sexual violence and inspire respectful behavior and a safe learning environment at Saint Mary’s.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
