SMU’s Abankwah, Jubenville and Taylor named AUS Football Players of the Week 3


September 27, 2011 (HALIFAX, N.S.) – The CIS No. 7-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies swept the Week 3 AUS Football Players of the Week selections as Melvin Abankwah, Rob Jubenville and Jahmeek Taylor were all honoured for their play for the period ending September 25th, 2011.

Offensive Player of the Week

Running back Melvin Abankwah of the CIS No. 7-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 25th, 2011. Abankwah, a first-year player from Etobicoke, Ont., racked up 224 all-purpose yards this past Saturday in a 60-6 road victory over the Mount Allison Mounties in Moncton, NB. Melvin had 10 carries for 94 rushing yards, caught four passes for 112 yards including a 12-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter, and added one kickoff return for 18 yards. Abankwah currently ranks second in the Atlantic conference in both rushing yards with 181, and all-purpose yards with 405.

Defensive Player of the Week

Saint Mary’s defensive lineman Rob Jubenville is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 25th, 2011. Jubenville, a fourth-year student-athlete from Oshawa, Ont., recorded 7.0 tackles, including 2.0 tackles for losses and a sack in Saturday’s 60-6 road win over the Mount Allison Mounties. Rob currently leads the Atlantic conference with 21.5 tackles through three games and ranks second in league sacks with 3.5.

Special Teams Player of the Week

Jahmeek Taylor

Receiver and punt returner Jahmeek Taylor of the CIS No. 7-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies is the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week. Taylor, a fourth-year player from Mississauga, Ont., returned two punts for 94 yards, including a 80-yard return for a touchdown in the third quarter, in Saturday’s 60-6 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Moncton, NB. Jahmeek, already the Saint Mary’s career leader in punt return yardage with 1521 yards in four seasons with the Huskies, moved into third spot on the AUS all-time list with Saturday’s performance. Taylor, the 2010 AUS most outstanding player, also had 27 rushing yards and 14 receiving yards in the victory. He currently leads the Atlantic conference in punt return yardage (218 yards) and punt return average (16.8 yards per return) through three games.
