SMU’s Leger, Acadia’s Wade and StFX’s Alix named Week 5 AUS Football Players of the Week


October 11, 2011 (HALIFAX, N.S.) – Saint Mary’s running back Craig Leger, Acadia defensive back Cameron Wade and StFX place kicker Anthony Alix have been named the Week 5 AUS Football Players of the Week for their play during the period ending October 9th, 2011.


Offensive Player of the Week

For the second consecutive week, running back Craig Leger of the CIS No. 8-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week. Leger, a fifth-year senior from Salmon River, N.S., registered his fourth 100 yard-plus rushing performance of the season this past weekend in a 40-16 home win over the StFX X-Men. Craig, a two-time Atlantic conference all-star at running back, picked up 151 yards on 18 carries, including four runs of over 20 yards in the victory. He also added two receptions for 15 yards, giving him 166 all-purpose yards on the day. Leger currently leads the league in rushing yards with 528 yards through five games, and his 105.6 yards per game average ranks him fifth in the nation. Leger has also now moved into 9th spot on the AUS all-time rushing yards list with 2,332 career rushing yards.

Defensive Player of the Week

Acadia defensive back Cameron Wade is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 9th, 2011. Wade, a third-year defensive back from Moncton, N.B., picked up his first interception of the season and the fourth of his career this past weekend in a 29-14 road win over the Mount Allison Mounties. Cameron intercepted Mounties quarterback Jake Hotchkiss early in the second quarter and returned it 40 yards before being tackled at the Mounties 20-yard line. Wade, a 2010 AUS all-star defensive back, also recorded 2.5 tackles (1.5 tackles for a loss) and was credited with a half sack in the victory.

Punter and place kicker Anthony Alix of the StFX X-Men is the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week. Alix, a third-year Arts student from Mont-Tremblant, Que., scored 10 of StFX’s 16 points in the X-Men’s 40-16 loss to the No. 8-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies this past weekend. Anthony booted three field goals (29, 34 and 36 yards) and added a PAT on StFX’s only major. Alix also averaged 33.9 yards on 10 punts.
