SMU signs pair of OPC recruits (VIDEO)

Saint Mary’s Huskies have announced the additions of Leonardo Ingram and Jhovan McPherson to their football program.

Both players will join the Huskies for the 2016 AUS season.

Ingram is a 6’1, 260 pound defensive lineman from North York, Ontario.  He has suited up for the Toronto Thunder of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL). During the 2015 season, Ingram registered 27 assisted tackles, 31 solo tackles, two assisted sacks, eight solo sacks and one blocked kick. He was selected as an OVFL All-Star and also has previously participated in the Ontario Prospect Challenge (OPC) as a member of Team Central.

“Leo is an all-around athlete who can play inside or off the edge,” commented Huskies Interim Head Coach AJ Tufford.  “His speed and agility at his size are hard to find.”

For his part, the combination of academics and football steered Ingram towards the Halifax, Nova Scotia campus.

“Saint Mary’s is a good school, well known for business, which I want to study,” elaborated Ingram.  “Despite the losing record, I really do think we can compete with some proper coaching.”

“It was also easier to commit when you are going to be reunited with some really good teammates.”

Ultimately, the defensive lineman is appreciative of having the chance to continue his gridiron career with the Huskies.

“Coming into Canada from Jamaica, I’ve never thought football, of all sports would be what I’d ending up loving, after all I didn’t know anything about the game,” expressed Ingram.  “With the help of my coaches Paul Blackwood and Paul Swaby steering me, I ended up becoming a decent enough player, having the opportunity to play at post-secondary level at Saint Mary’s.”

Jhovan McPherson commitment

McPherson is a running back who suited up for the Toronto Thunder of the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) and also participated in the Ontario Prospect Challenge.

“Jhovan is the combination of strength and speed that we have been looking for,” assessed Tufford.  “We are excited to have him aboard.”
