CFC TOP 100 running back picks CWUAA team’s 2014 class after considering three other CIS schools.
Ben Cummings was deliberating over four schools and thought it would take a while before he came to his decision.
However, that all changed once the CFC TOP 100 running back officially visited one CIS campus. As a result, Cummings recently committed to the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds for the 2014 CWUAA season.
“My decision happened quicker than I expected,” explained Cummings. “I had it down to my top 4 – UBC, Queen’s, Calgary and McMaster.”
“As soon as I went on an official tour of the UBC campus, I fell in love, it just felt right. I know Coach (Shawn) Olson and Coach (Paul) Orazietti both very well, which was a big factor in my decision as I feel I can trust them and that they are both excellent coaches. UBC has one of the top business schools in the country and is one of two Canadian universities in the top 100 in the world, so that was a big factor as well as I know football does not last forever. I feel that I will have the chance to play as a freshman also, which is a big factor for me. I also feel that UBC is on the rise. I see a Vanier Cup coming very soon for the Thunderbirds. I wanted to go somewhere where I could win a championship, and I feel that UBC is a perfect fit. Also, the location is perfect as I am an hour drive from my house and my family.”
The 5’9, 175 pound native of Abbotsford, British Columbia recently played for Robert Bateman Timberwolves of the British Columbia High School Football Association (BCHSFA). This past fall, Cummings rushed for 1700 yards on 128 carries (average of 12.3 yards per carry) and scored 25 touchdowns with the Timberwolves.
