The Rams’ most dangerous weapon on Special Teams last season will return faster and stronger this year. Nick Downey, who was selected as the CJFL’s All-Canadian Return Specialist and BCFC’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2009, will once again dawn the powder blue and gold when the Rams open the 2010 campaign in Nanaimo.

Downey made the opposition hold their breath each time the ball was kicked in his direction last year. The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native tallied 1,158 return yards averaging 29.3 yards a kick-off return and 18.9 yards a punt return. Downey would also run back two punts for touchdowns plus a 102 yard kick-off return for a major against the Kamloops Broncos on August 15th.

He would compile 19 receptions for 434 yards, an average of 22.8 yards a catch in 2009 along with five touchdowns. His most productive game last season was in Kelowna as he caught five passes for 128 yards and a touchdown in the Rams 34-26 win over the Okanagan Sun.

Before joining the Rams in 2009, Downey played the 2008 season at Acadia University.

A graduate of Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth, Downey has a number of awards to his credit. They are:

2009 – CJFL All-Canadian Return Specialist
2009 – BCFC Most Outstanding Special Teams Player
2009 – BCFC All-Star
2007 & 2008 – Nova Scotia High School Offensive MVP

Downey and the Rams are hoping to improve on their 7-3 mark 2009.
