Squires, King and Lauther named Week 8 AUS football players of the week

October 30, 2012 (HALIFAX, NS)- Acadia Axemen receiver Mike Squires, along with Saint Mary’s Huskies defensive back Neil King and Saint Mary’s Huskies place kicker/punter Brett Lauther have been named Week 8 AUS football players of the week.

Receiver Michael Squires of the CIS No. 9-ranked Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 28th, 2012.

Squires, a 6-foot-4 fifth-year senior from Halifax, N.S., had 10 receptions for 84 yards and four touchdowns this past weekend in a 45-24 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville, N.B.

Trailing 7-2 after the opening quarter, Acadia quarterback Kyle Graves hooked up with Squires for three touchdowns in the second quarter to give the Axemen a 23-10 lead at the half. The duo added a fourth TD early in the third quarter to put the Axemen ahead 32-10.

With the four TD receptions in a single-game, Michael became the first player in CIS history to accomplish the feat on two separate occasions. He also had four receiving touchdowns in a game last season vs. Saint Mary’s.

Squires, a first team all-Canadian last year, finished the season with 619 receiving yards and led the Atlantic conference in receptions with 53, and receiving touchdowns with six.

Saint Mary’s defensive back Neil King is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 28th, 2012.

King, a fifth-year student from Edmonton, Alta., recorded 8.5 tackles this past weekend, including eight solo tackles and one tackle for a loss in a 49-3 win over the StFX X-Men to clinch a playoff berth and finish in second place in the AUS standings.

King, an AUS all-star at safety in 2011, finished second among defensive backs this season with a career-best 39.0 tackles.

The Huskies (3-5) will host the third place Mount Allison Mounties (3-5) this Saturday in the Subway AUS semifinal game. Game time is 1:00pm.

Brett Lauther

Place kicker and punter Brett Lauther of the Saint Mary’s Huskies is the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week.

Lauther, a third-year Arts student from Truro, N.S., had another solid outing for the Huskies this past weekend as Saint Mary’s defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 49-3 in Halifax.

Brett, a 2011 AUS all-star, connected on 4-of-5 field goal attempts in the victory and was 5-of-5 on PAT’s to account for 17 points. His successful field goals came from 12, 34, 39 and 21 yards respectively. He also averaged 36.7 yards on seven punts, including two downed inside the 20-yard line in the game.

Lauther closes out the 2012 season in fifth place in AUS career field goals made with 42 and is currently seventh all-time in career converts made with 72.

He also led the conference in scoring for the second year in a row with 73 points and his 16 field goals made this year are tied for fifth-most in a single season.
