St. Albert player commits to Golden Bears

The Golden Bears add another local commit to their team.

The University of Alberta has a deep history with the Cuciz family, a narrative that will contain another chapter after Sam Cuciz, a free safety from St. Alberta Catholic Secondary School, signed his letter of intent for the Golden Bears on Oct. 16.

The product of the St. Albert Skyhawks (Metro Edmonton High School League) plays as both a quarterback and free safety, however he signed with the Golden Bears as a free safety. One of the reasons why he chose the University of Alberta was due to its location.

“It is nice to play close to home, as I could continue spending time with my family. My family has also had a long history at the UofA as my mom and dad graduated there.” he said. His father played on the Golden Bears as a defensive end. His older brother also attends the university and is currently completing his second year.

Cuciz has already been accepted into Engineering at the university on Oct. 14. The program was another reason why he committed to Alberta. “The way that the engineering program is structured to work in conjunction with football was really interesting, as no other CIS Team has as many engineers on the roster as the Golden Bears do,” he said.

“The coaching staff is excellent as Head Coach Morris helped restructure the entire program with additional academic help for all students on the roster,” he added.

The young free safety is 6’1, 185lbs. In his ten-year career, he has played with the St. Albert Bucs (atom), the St. Albert Riders (peewee) and the St. Albert Fury (bantam) in the Capital District Minor Football Association. He also played with the Zone 5 Extreme Team in the Alberta Summer Games and the Team Alberta U16 in the International Bowl. In his first year of high school football, he was Rookie of the Year (2014) and in 2015, he was Offensive MVP.
