St. Andrew’s U16 team opens with win

The St. Andrew’s College Under 16 football team opened the 2010 season on a winning note on Saturday September 18 by defeating Villanova College at their own homecoming. This was sweet revenge for a disappointing ‘09 season that began with a Homecoming loss to the same Villanova Knights one year ago.

Things started off well for the Saints, when they recovered a fumble on the first play that Villanova ran. The Saints took possession of the ball at midfield and drove the ball convincingly for a series of first downs that ended when tailback, Tyler St. Kitts Park, scampered into the corner of the end-zone for his first of two touchdowns on the day. The second major score of the day demonstrated tremendous team balance of strength. It began with a long kickoff by the special teams unit, led by Scott Elliott, that pinned Villanova deep in their own territory. A strong defensive stand by the Saints defense forced a punt, turning the ball over inside the 50 yard line. The offense was able to convert this field position into a second major before the end of the highly entertaining first quarter. The Saints controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball all day, holding the Villanova Knights to just 3 points until late in the 4th quarter. The Saints defense, led by Cole Sopik and Ryan Shotbolt, played well all day, holding Villanova to only a handful of first downs and very little yardage gained while forcing two turnovers a fumble recovery and an interception.

A meaningless VC touchdown late in the game narrowed the score to 13-10 making the final score closer than the play would have indicated. Offensively, St. Kitts Park was the star of the game, but was supported well by QB Garrett Arsenault and the entire offensive line. Also scoring was Scott Elliott with a single pt conversion on two attempts.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
