St Andrew’s Dominates St. Mike’s at Homecoming

The 1st Football team entered Saturday’s game well aware that the team has traditionally not played well at Homecoming. Earlier in the week, the Saints were ranked #1 in the GTA by the Toronto Star.http://www.canadafootballchat.us/news/attachments/2270-sac-jpg.html
These two factors had the Saints motivated to put on a show for the Andrean community this afternoon. Although Saturday’s performance wasn’t β€œperfect,” the final score of 56-14 against arch-rival St. Mike’s demonstrated how truly dominant the Saints were in all three phases of the game.

On offence, receivers Casey Cook, Josh Smith, Jamal Kett and Dave Head proved to be an unstoppable matchup for the St. Mike’s secondary. Cook finished the day with 3 tds, Head with 2, Smith with 1, and Kett had several long receptions for key first downs. All four of these big play receivers were at their best today. Star running back Yannick Harou also joined the scoring party with 2 tds on the ground. The Saints offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the day, allowing the skill players to make big plays. Finally, quarterback Mark Sandell was nothing short of spectacular. Sandell finished the day with almost 400 yards passing and 5 tds in the air, and demonstrated excellent poise in his ability to audible the run game at the line of scrimmage.

On defence, the Saints defensive front 7 controlled the play. The defensive line spent most of the day in the St. Mike’s backfield, while the heralded linebacker trio of β€œ8, 9, 10” flew to the football and made several key tackles. The Saints defensive backs were also swarming to the football all day, making a total of 3 interceptions and coming close to several more.
Dave Head filled in as kicker for the injured Alex Harris and converted all 8 of his convert attempts.

Next up for the Saints is a huge game against the undefeated and # 3 ranked in the GTA UCC Blues this Saturday, October 2nd at home on Ackerman Field. The Saints will look to continue their winning ways and defend their # 1 ranking.
