Statement from MTA on AUS Football proceedings on night of Loney Bowl

Sackville, NB – Mount Allison University has released the following statement from the Director of Athletics & Recreation Mr. Pierre Arsenault with regards to the ongoing AUS football proceedings:

A formal complaint was submitted to U SPORTS on November 2nd, on behalf of Mount Allison, Bishop’s, St. FX and Acadia. This complaint requested that U SPORTS review the eligibility of a player on the roster of the Saint Mary’s University football team. Legal motions in Ontario initiated by Saint Mary’s stalled the consideration of this complaint. Due to uncertainty of player eligibility, the AUS cancelled the Loney Bowl on Thursday, November 9th.

On November 12, the Nova Scotia Supreme court ruled that the Loney Bowl must be played by Tuesday, November 14th. That game, involving the Saint Mary’s Huskies and regular-season champion Acadia Axemen, will be hosted by Acadia University, and we wish all participants a safe contest.

The eligibility complaint submitted to U SPORTS has not yet been addressed, the result of legal motions undertaken by Saint Mary’s University. Like StFX, we believe that U SPORTS must be allowed to complete their independent eligibility review process, and communicate that decision to all parties.
