Stingers Robertson punches ticket to CFL camp

Under the intense scrutiny of the professional scouts at the CFL Eastern regional combine, Concordia Stinger Kris Robertson put on an impressive showing and earned an invitation to the league’s Toronto evaluation camp this weekend.

The regional audition was held yesterday in Quebec City where Robertson, a fourth-year defensive back and return specialist, ran a 4.48 40 time. There were 31 participants and it was the fastest time recorded. His vertical leap was 39 inches, also the best out of all the athletes tested.

On March 18, the CFL tested another 38 players at a Western regional combine in Edmonton. Of the 69 players evaluated in the last few days only three were invited to Toronto – Calgary Colts DB Jermaine Gabriel, Calgary Dinos lineman Michael Klassen and Robertson. At the evaluation camp this weekend, they will compete with approximately 50 of the top prospects for the 2013 CFL draft which will be held May 6.

Robertson, a Pickering, Ont. native, was named to the second team CIS all-Canadian team in 2012. He was a first team all-Canadian in 2011, becoming the first Stinger in school history to earn national all-star recognition as a return specialist.

Last fall, playing in nine games in the RSEQ conference, he returned 32 punts for 297 yards, while adding another 636 yards on kickoff returns. He averaged 115.8 all-purpose yards a game.

The Sociology major was also a starting halfback for the Stingers. He led the RSEQ in interceptions with four. He took two of them back for touchdowns.
