Stingers to host Guelph in preseason grid game thursday

For the first time in more than a decade the Concordia Stingers will host a preseason football game when the Guelph Gryphons visit Concordia stadium this Thursday at noon.

Both teams are expected to dress about 70 players. The veterans will begin the game and the younger players will take over in the latter part of the match.

Based on 2009’s numbers, the Stingers and the Gryphons match up well. Both teams posted 3-5 win-loss records last season. Both teams squeaked into the playoffs and were eliminated in the first round.

The Stingers may have one advantage going in. With all-star quarterback Rob Mackay back for his fifth year, Concordia will have another impressive passing attack. He averaged 342 yards a game –third best in the CIS last season. Guelph’s pass-defence ranked 25[SUP]th[/SUP] out of 27 teams last year.

Guelph is under the direction of first-year coach Stu Lang. Players to watch include third-year quarterback Chris Rossetti. He is expected to be the starter and must follow one of the best quarterbacks in Gryphon history. Second-year wide receiver Jason Diston could also be interesting. He was the CIS Male Rookie of the Year in track and field after an exceptional season competing in pentathlon.

There’s no charge to watch the game.

Concordia stadium is located at 7200 Sherbrooke St. W. Due to construction on campus, visitors will enter the stadium at the east end of the field.
