Strong offence leads Western to win over Windsor (VIDEO)

LONDON, Ont. – Back on home turf at TD Waterhouse Stadium the Western Mustangs got back to their winning ways picking up a 43-26 victory over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon in London.BOXSCORE

Both the offence and defence were firing on all cylinders with the offence finding the endzone five times while the defence held a powerful Windsor offence to only three touchdowns.
““There were times and moments that we played outstanding, we did a great job on defence, great plays on offence, but other times when we were inconsistent and undisciplined, we took too many penalties today,” said Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall.
Third-year receiver Brian Marshall had his best game of the 2012 season catching six balls for 149 yards and including a beautiful 69-yard touchdown pass from his brother Donnie Marshall.
“We came out strong, ground and passing, we almost let them back in though, we can’t make mistakes and have to eliminate those if we want to play with McMaster next week,” said Brian on the team’s performance following the game.
While the Marshalls generated offence through the air the ground game was also strong and in what’s quickly becoming a common occurrence for the Mustangs, Garret Sanvido again ran for over 100 yards. This time he racked up 209 yards on 27 carries, making it the fourth consecutive game this season he’s rushed for over 100 yards. He also added two touchdowns, making it seven on the season.
The defence kept Windsor to only three touchdowns and was led by defensive back Harold Mutobola who was all over the field, earning seven tackles and an interception that came three yards short of a touchdown.
“It’s a long time coming,” said Mutobola on his strong performance. “I’ve been patient enough to know that I’m capable of a good game and I knew my time would come eventually. It’s relieving to know that I’m capable of playing at the level I did today and hopefully I can keep it up.”
Despite having two of the highest scoring offences in the country both teams were unable to find the endzone in the first quarter, with the only scoring coming a little over 12 minutes into the game on a 16-yard field goal from Western’s Lirim Hajarullahu that capped a 10-play 72-yard drive.
After regaining possession the Mustangs didn’t wait long to score, as Garret Sanvido earned the first major of the day on a 13-yard run less than two minutes into the second frame.
Just over a minute later the Mustangs conceded a safety to put the Lancers on the board and make it 12-2, however after that neither team was able to score until the Lancers conceded a safety of their own with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter.
After trading possessions, the Mustangs regained the ball and marched 63 yards in only 1:02 finishing with another touchdown run by Garret Sanvido to make it 19-2 Mustangs at the half.
The second half began with neither team able to put up points until midway through the third quarter when Hajarullahu hit his second field goal of the day, this one from 12 yards, to put Western ahead by 20. That lead would quickly expand as Donnie Marshall found Brian Marshall on a 69-yard touchdown pass to move the score to 29-2.
The Lancers refused to give up, beginning a comeback attempt early in the fourth quarter as quarterback Austin Kennedy scored on a QB dive to earn Windsor’s first touchdown of the day. They wouldn’t waste much time getting their second TD, as Kennedy found Evan Pszczonak on a 20-yard  pass to pull Windsor within 13 with 10 minutes left on the clock.
Less than three minutes later freshman Yannick Harou fired back for Western with a one yard TD run that was set up by a 58-yard run from Garret Sanvido who was pulled down just outside the endzone. Hajarullahu made the conversion to put Western ahead 36-16.
Kennedy then continued to show why he’s one of the top quarterbacks in the OUA leading his team on a six-play 85 yard drive that ended with a five yard TD pass to Jordan Brescacin, one of 10 balls he caught on the day. The Lancers would pull within 10 a few minutes later on a 14 yard field goal, making it 36-26 with just over a minute remaining.
That would be as close as the Lancers got as Harold Mutobola picked off a Kennedy pass and returned it 68 yards down to the Windsor eight yard line to end the Lancers hopes of a comeback, and set up a final one yard TD run from Harou to make it a 43-26 final.
The Mustangs are back in action next weekend hosting the top-ranked McMaster Marauders in a Yates Cup rematch that will be shown live across Canada on the Score. It’s also Western’s Homecoming weekend so TD Waterhouse Stadium will be packed with alumni when the game kicks off at 1:00 p.m
