Team B.C. outlasts Manitoba in defensive battle (stats)

TEAM BC DEFEATS TEAM MANITOBA 18-0 TO OPEN 2011 FOOTBALL CANADA CUP

LETHBRIDGE, A.B. – Team BC (British Columbia provincial under-18 team) has opened the 2011 Football Canada Cup tournament today with an 18-0 victory over Team Manitoba at the University of Lethbridge Community Sports Stadium in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Team BC will now face Team Quebec on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 6 pm PT (7 pm MT) with a berth in the gold medal game on the line. Team Quebec defeated Team Ontario East by a score of 42-13 in their contest on Tuesday.

After a tight defensive battle in the first half of the contest which saw British Columbia emerge with just a slim 1-0 lead, Team BC’s offence came to life in the second half posting 17 points to put the game out of reach.

β€œOur offence, predictably so, started a bit slowly,” said Team BC head coach Tom Kudaba following the victory. β€œThe good thing our offence never did in the first half was cause us to get into trouble. We didn’t give the ball up at all on any turnovers. We were able to maintain pretty good field position with the strength of our defence and our kicking game.”

REC Dustin Rodriguez’s 33-yard field goal expanded Team BC’s lead to 4-0 before QB Jordan Deverill was able to connect with REC Sam Davies on a 17-yard touchdown pass to further increase British Columbia’s lead to 11-0 with the convert.

QB Mike Carney had a two-yard run for a touchdown to round out the scoring.

β€œWe were able to interchange our two quarterbacks – Carney and Deverill – which add different components to the offence,” said Kudaba. β€œCarney is a better runner and Deverill is more of a drop-back passer so we were kind of able to do that in the second half and take advantage of some of the miscues of Manitoba’s defence.

β€œThe first touchdown was a long pass over the middle and then we ended up getting the ball back on a turnover and we were able to drive down for another quarterback sneak with Carney.”

On the defensive side, Team BC held Team Manitoba to just 187 total yards of offence including just 51 yards on the ground.

RB Terrell Davis was named Team BC’s offensive player of the game while LB Jake Heathcote was named Team BC’s defensive player of the game.
