Team World adds final 24 players, including 15 Canadians (videos & bios)

The International Federation of American Football has selected an additional 24 players for the IFAF World Team roster that will face Team USA in USA Football’s International Bowl on Wednesday, February 1 in Austin, Texas.

Canadian head coach GREG MARSHALL and his staff met at the AFCA Convention in San Antonio this week and confirmed a roster of 46 players by adding to those announced in November, December and early January. Four roster spots will remain open, to be filled by players elevated from the IFAF Development Team that will also practice in Austin later this month.

The current 46-man IFAF roster features players from nine IFAF member federations – American Samoa, Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Japan, Mexico, Spain and Sweden.

The Texas state capital will host the third annual International Bowl – formerly known as USA vs. The World – when the IFAF World Team of teenage American football players takes on American’s Under-19 National Team, composed of current high school seniors (class of 2012) at the Kelly Reeves Athletics Complex in Austin.

Five additions to the IFAF World Team roster starred for their respective countries at the six-team 2011 European Junior Championship played in Seville, Spain last summer.

CANADIANS ADDED

Among the 15 Canadian players added to the IFAF World Team roster, running back ANTHONY COOMBS made an immediate impact in his first game with the University of Manitoba in 2011, with rushing and receiving touchdowns, his 90-yard scoring grab being the second longest (tied) in Bison history. He led the Bison in rushing in 2011 with 84 carries for 661 yards and 8 touchdowns. Manitoba teammate EVAN GILL joins the World Team at defensive end having finished fourth among Bison tacklers with 32.5 stops, including 6.5 for a loss, and 3.5 sacks in 2011.

Three Canadian linebackers are added to the roster, including CASEY CHIN, who was the Simon Fraser University Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2011, CONNOR RALPH from the University of Alberta, and JOHN RUSH of the University of Guelph. Ralph was his team’s third-leading tackler in 2011 with 44 tackles including 5 for a loss, 3 sacks and an interception, while Rush also finished third in stops at Guelph with 42 including 3 for a loss and a sack.

A pair of offensive linemen has been selected from the University of Calgary. SEAN McEWAN completed his first season in 2011 and was named rookie of the month in November. Teammate SUKH CHUNGH, a two-year member of the Dinos, returns for a second time to the IFAF World Team having played in the inaugural game against Team USA in Fort Lauderdale in 2010.

The University of Western Ontario supplies two more players to the IFAF World Team roster in returning offensive tackle WINSTON MILES, who played against Team USA in 2011 and wide receiver MATT BRAZIER, who caught 5 passes for 69 yards for the Mustangs last season.

Safety CHRIS ACKIE started as a freshman for Wilfrid Laurier University in 2011, making 17 solo tackles and 7 assisted.

————————————————-

Joining two Gold Medal-winning Austrians already selected are two members of the French junior team that won the silver medal in Spain. Linebacker GUITEREMBI VICKOS, who plays his club football with Amiens Spartiates, was named to the all-tournament team having recorded a team-leading 10.5 tackles and a forced fumble in two group games. In the Gold Medal game loss to Austria, he had 7 tackles, including one for a loss. Safety and club teammate VICTOR FERRIER claimed 4 tackles and a pass break up in France’s march to the final, where he made a further 5 tackles.

Spanish wide receiver JEAN-CLAUDE MADIN CEREZO was named to the all-tournament team as a kick returner. Madin Cerezo, who plays his club football in Germany with the Hamburg Huskies, had 9 kickoff returns for 204 yards and 2 receptions for 64 yards in three games at the EJC.

Defensive tackle IVAN CAMPOS of the Gothenburg Marvels and offensive lineman ROBIN SVALLIN of the Tyreso Royal Crowns helped Sweden to win the Bonze Medal in Spain.

Mexico has four representatives on the IFAF World Team roster. Defensive end EMIGDIO PALACIOS won the 2010 CONADEIP National Championship with the UDLAP Aztecas, while center MAURICIO ROMERO from UNAM represented Mexico at the 2011 IFAF Senior World Championship in Austria.

Defensive back SERGIO SCHAFFINO plays for ITESM-Monterrey and helped his team reach the CONADEIP Conference Premier Final in 2011. In the semi final he returned an interception for a touchdown and also claimed an interception for the CONADEIP All-Stars team that defeated Team Stars & Stripes, an American team composed of NCAA D-III all-stars in the Tazon de Estrellas in December. Wide receiver DANIEL SILLER of UDLAP scored on a 45-yard reception in the 45-27 win over the Americans.

——————————————————–

In order to be eligible for the IFAF World Team program, players must be nominated by their national federation and are evaluated by the coaching staff based on film review and weekly training log results collected through the IFAF World Team web portal. In 2011 the IFAF World Team narrowly lost 21-14 to Team USA at Westlake High School in Austin, and in 2010, the Americans were held scoreless until the final play of the first half before going on to win 17-0 at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

The NCAA recognizes USA Football’s International Bowl as a national team competition, meaning the game is not an all-star game. Playing for the United States in the International Bowl is exempt from high school seniors’ two all-star game appearances.
