It’s like being the last pick in gym class.

You stand there, awkwardly, looking around knowing that while you may be on the team, you are not exactly ‘one of the guys.’

For university quarterbacks at CFL training camps, the situation can be just as awkward.

The CFL’s Non-import Quarterback Development Program is a venture by the league to help Canadian quarterbacks’ breakthrough in the CFL. The top-eight CIS quarterbacks are plucked from the college-ranks and shipped off to spend the summer training under professional lights.

The intent is for CIS quarterbacks to experience the CFL life: study the game, learn the ropes and develop skills they can use in the future.

But intent and practice are two different things.

Critics claim quarterbacks in the program are pedestrians on the field, simply shadowing the ‘real’ quarterbacks as they go through drills. Individual reps are minimal, scrimmage reps are non-existent and coaches steer clear of them as if they had the plague.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
