O TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN’
The Gators have not accomplished such a victory against theWolfpackΒ since the AFL semi-final game in 2010. Β Saturday saw the Gators win by a score of 40-26. Β Points came from all over the field as Devon Richardson scored on a 102 yard kickoff return for a special teams TD. Β David La picked offΒ LeasonΒ for 6 on defense. Β Nick Berry and LiamΒ GreaneyΒ both rushed in TDs. Β DavidΒ SlatcherΒ brought in a pass fromΒ GreaneyΒ for a TD while dragging former Gator CB Miles Myers into the end zone with him. Β Kicker Ian Hewitt did his job as well, kicking all 5 conversions and a field goal for 8 points. Β LeasonΒ also took a knee in theΒ endzoneΒ to concede the safety.
The Gators offensive line looked fantastic, much improved from week 1. Β They paved the way forΒ 6 Gators running backsΒ whoput up 110 total yards and 2 TDs. Β GreaneyΒ looked sharp for the most part tossing for 160Β yards and rushing for 38 butunfortunately made a few bad decisions, getting picked off 3 times Saturday.
On the other side of the ball, the Gators defense looked like ravenous animals. Β The line put almost constant pressure on QBLeason, forcing several bad throws and getting a few hard licks on him in the process. Β One in particular coming in the 4th, when EndsΒ DevronΒ Brown and Devin Mullen collided withΒ LeasonΒ at the same time.Β Β Described as a sounding like a car crash, Darryl was the certainly the slowest to get up of the three. Β LB Donny Scott was on his βAβ game, pounding Pack receivers and backs every chance he got.Β Β Pack RB SeanΒ AhronsonΒ is quoted as sayingΒ βThey (Gators) officially have my vote as the hardest hitting team this year!β
Despite the big plays and the big win, one thing overshadowed it all. Β The Gators were proud to host the families from Inn from the Cold. Β The barbecue, face painting,Β souvenirΒ Gators hats,Β and Β fanΒ giveaways were all part of a very successful evening. Β Ensuring the families, especially the kids, had a wonderful time at the game. Β The Gators would like to thank ShaunΒ McClementsand his wife Tanya for making and donating theΒ souvenirΒ hats, BlaineΒ CoupalΒ and his wife for their generous donation towards the food. Β Superior Propane and Mike Russo for bringing the fantastic grill and doing all the cooking.Β Β TressaΒ Kersey for helping to organize the whole event and running it.Β Β All our volunteers who helped as well,Β without whom this event wouldnβt have been possible. Β Of course the Gators and Pack fans who were a big part of over $1000 being raised to donate to the shelter. Β Thank you so much everyone!
The Gators are next in action against the Central Alberta Buccaneers in Lacombe. Β Game time is 6pm.
