Toronto Varsity Blues add Irv Daymond as OC

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues are pleased to announce that Irv Daymond has been named the football team’s new offensive coordinator, effective immediately.

“I am very pleased that we are able to fill our staffing vacancy with a quality coach like Irv Daymond,” said Beth Ali, executive director of athletics and physical activity. “Irv brings valuable coaching and playoff experience with him that will support the growth and development of our football program. His expertise will compliment the work and plan that Greg Marshall and his staff have put in place. The intercollegiate and high performance program is committed to provide the appropriate resources to provide our student-athletes with the best opportunity to be successful while at U of T.”

Daymond comes to U of T after six seasons as the offensive line coach with the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. There, Daymond was a part of a coaching staff that helped rebuild a stifled program and then led the Hawks to league-best 7-1 record in 2016, through to a clutch 43-40 Yates Cup win over the Western University Mustangs.

A two-time OUA all-star and 1985 CIS (now U SPORTS) all-Canadian while a student at Western, Daymond was selected in the sixth round of the 1984 CFL draft by the BC Lions. He moved on and played 10 seasons for the Ottawa Rough Riders (1986-1995) where he was twice named the Rough Rider Citizen of the Year (1990, 1991) as well as being named a CFL East all-star in 1992.

“I am thrilled to welcome Irv Daymond to the Varsity Blues”, said Greg Marshall, head coach of the Blues football program. “Irv’s passion for coaching and teaching young men how to train, practice and play the game combined with his football knowledge will be a great addition to the program. Irv’s love of the game and dedication to our athletes will set a great example for our current and future players.”

Daymond has also been very active, volunteering his time to coach all levels of the sport. Most notably as the offensive line coach for Team Ontario, 2013-19, the O-line coach for Football Canada’s U16 squad (2018) and prior to that, Daymond was a member of the uOttawa Gee-Gees coaching staff from 2006-11.

“I am excited to bring my fundamentally sound methods of offensive line play to develop a young group of student-athletes with the expectation of increasing offensive production”, said Daymond.

The Varsity Blues kick off the 2019 season visiting the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday, August 25 and return to Varsity Stadium on Labour Day Sunday, September 1, to take on the Windsor Lancers in their home opener. For a complete schedule of dates and times, click here.
