Tsoumpas signs on as Dinos’ OL coach

CALGARY – University of Calgary Dinos football head coach Wayne HarrisΒ announced Wednesday that three-time Canadian Football League all-star Dimitri Tsoumpas will join the program as offensive line coach.

Tsoumpas, 29, enjoyed a stellar five-year career with the Calgary Stampeders, winning a Grey Cup title in his rookie season after the Stamps selected him second overall in the 2008 CFL Draft. He went on to earn four straight CFL West All-Star nods at guard from 2009-12 and was recognized as a league all-star in each of 2010, 2011, and 2012.

After retiring, Tsoumpas worked in strength and conditioning and assisted with the Stampeders in that area during their 2014 Grey Cup championship season.

“When I got the call from Wayne, I thought it was the perfect opportunity,” said Tsoumpas. “Working with the Stampeders I found I gravitated most toward the offensive line, and as I player I took pride in preparing my teammates and holding them to a higher standard. I tried to be exemplary in all the drills that I did, and the guys looked to me for leadership. In this new role with the Dinos, I will have a chance to teach the young players the lessons I’ve learned and share with them a wealth of knowledge as they develop over four or five years. I’ve lived it, I understand the strength and conditioning background, and I understand the football world. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity.”

“Dimitri Tsoumpas brings a wealth of football knowledge and experience to the Dinos,” said Harris. “As an all-star with the Stampeders, he was described as being like a coach on the field, and he will bring a positive influence to our veteran offensive line.”

A native of Edmonton, Tsoumpas attended Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, where he earned second team Big Sky honours in his senior year. He received a degree in kinesiology with a minor in coaching.

The Dinos will take the field at McMahon Stadium for Spring Camp April 29-May 3.
