U of T adds 5 recruits from across Ontario (video)

Matthew Sharpe is the third brother in his family to don the Blue & White and highlights the next group of standouts that have accepted their offers of admission and committed to the Varsity Blues football program for the fall of 2011.

His brothers, Ben and Willie, are third- and fifth-year members of the football program. While Willie has shone in Toronto’s secondary, and Ben has been a top receiver, brother Matthew will try his hand at cracking the line up as a running back. A native of Renfrew, Ont., Sharpe was named the most valuable player at Renfrew Collegiate in 2010.

The Blues are also pleased to announce a solid defensive corps that is sure to turn heads in the fall. Pickering, Ont., native Taylor Eskins is a versatile player who looks to make an impact among Toronto’s defensive backs. He has been named the Pickering Dolphins special teams most valuable player for three consecutive seasons, while also winning the defensive leadership award in 2008.

A 6-foot-1 defensive back, John Connors comes to U of T from the St. Joan of Arc Knights in Barrie, Ont. He was twice named the Knights defensive player of the year and also won the veteran leadership award in 2010. Connors begins his studies in the Faculty of Physical Education & Health in September.

The captain of Southwood Secondary School’s football team, linebacker Dylan Gordon is a two-time defensive MVP. He received the John Durance memorial coach’s award and has been accepted into the Concurrent Teacher Education Program (CTEP) within the Faculty of Physical Education & Health.

Ibadan, Nigeria native Ebunoluwa David has also accepted his offer of admission into business administration at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. A cornerback, David was named the Oshawa Hawkeye’s 2009 rookie of the year.

Students who sign a letter of intent and commit to Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams will be eligible to play at the University of Toronto provided they are academically admissible and have applied through the normal process with the Ontario Universities Application Centre.
