The Mounties Allison Mounties came away with two big wins on Saturday. First, the Mounties defeated StFX 32-15 for a critical week 7 win in AUS football action.  To add to that before the game Mount Allison announced the formation of a $1 million endowment to support Mounties student athletes.

Both teams started the afternoon cautiously with no scoring over the first quarter. The Mounties were first to hit the scoreboard as senior quarterback Troy Downton drove his Mounties 58 yards on 7 plays, finding senior Jared Rawlings in the end zone from 10 yards out to put the Mounties up 7-0.

On the next StFX possession Mounties sophomore defensive back Tyree Dunn intercepted Josh Millar’s pass and ran it back 38 yards to give the Mounties the ball back on StFX 22 yard line.  Five plays later Downton converted a 3rd and goal try, again finding Rawlings in the end zone, this time from 3 yards out.  The Mounties failed to convert the extra point to leave the score at 13-0.

The Mounties added to their lead on their next possession when senior kicker Ryan Lambert connected from 29 yards out to bring the score to 16-0.  StFX would pick up a single point off a missed field goal late in the 2nd quarter to leave the score at 16-1 at halftime.

With six minutes gone in the 3rd quarter the Mounties pushed their lead to 19-1 with Lambert’s second field goal as he connected from 16 yards out.  After the Mounties conceded a safety to leave the score at 19-3, Lambert connected on his 3rd field goal of the afternoon, hitting from 32 yards.

StFX matched these points with a 39 yard field goal from Jonathan Heidebrecht with 3 minutes gone in the 4th quarter to pull the score to 22-6. But the Mounties went right back to work, driving 75 yards before Chris Reid found the end zone on a 1 yard run.

With the score 29-6, StFX took only 37 seconds to respond as Dylan Fisher hit Kaion Julien-Grant for a 67 yard touchdown, the longest play of the day for either side.  StFX was unsuccessful on the 2-point convert attempt, leaving the score at 29-12.

From there the Mounties were able to lock down the win, culminating with a two minute drive at the end of the game where Lambert kicked his 4th field goal of the afternoon as time expired.  This gave the Mounties a 32-15 win.  The big play on the final drive came when Chris Reid busted open a 38 yard run.

Mounties’ quarterback Troy Downton was 26 of 35 for 255 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Chris Reid had 194 yards on 26 carries with 1 touchdown. Kiel Ambursley chipped in with 94 yards of his own on 14 carries as the Mounties amassed 541 yards of total offense in the game.  Subway Player of the game Jared Rawlings had 6 catches for 54 yards and 2 touchdowns while junior Josh Hicks had 9 catches for 111 yards.

For StFX Josh Millar was 7 of 15 for 86 yards and 1 interception before leaving the game with an injury.  Dylan Fisher was 7 of 15 for 117 yards and 1 touchdown in relief. AUS All-Star Jordan Socholotiuk was held to 75 yards on 13 attempts.  Kaion Julien-Grant had 4 catches for 106 yards and the X-Men’s only touchdown.

The Mounties wore purple during Saturday’s game to help support Craig’s Cause to raise awareness for the fight against pancreatic cancer.  Former Mountie Matt Zwicker got the Mounties interested in supporting this important cause as he watches his own father, Darren, battle pancreatic cancer. It was announced at the end of the game that $10,000 was raised as part of today’s efforts to ‘Tackle Pancreatic Cancer’.

Before the game Mount Allison University announced the formation of the James Rogers Student-Athlete Awards, a $1 million endowment to help provide student athlete scholarships.  The fund has been created through the generous support of donors to Mounties athletics.

The Mounties (2-4) now enter a bye week before heading to Bishop’s on October 21st. StfX (3-3) travels to Acadia on Saturday, October 14th.

SHERBROOKE, Que. – A pair of fourth-quarter field goals by Jarett Saumure gave the Acadia University Axemen a 27-24, come-from-behind, victory over the Bishop’s University Gaiters in Atlantic University Sport football action at Coulter Field in Lennoxville, Saturday. The rookie place kicker from Timberlea, N.S. connected on a 10-yarder with 4:51 left to tie the game, and his 21-yarder with 1:55 left put the visitors ahead, capping an Acadia comeback from 24-12 down in the third quarter.

The Axemen got off to a quick start, as they blocked the Gaiters first punt of the game, and took possession on the Bishop’s 47. Four plays later, a five-yard run by Dale Wright put the visitors up 6-0 with only 1:38 gone in the contest.  The teams traded field goals later in the quarter, and a late safety touch gave Acadia an 11-3 lead after 15 minutes.

Playing with the wind in the second quarter, the Gaiters offence, under rookie quarterback Stephen Casey (Boucherville, Que./Champlain College St-Lambert), started to find its footing. Vincent Dubé connected on a pair of field goals to cut the margin to 11-9. The Gaiters finally found pay dirt with 53 seconds left in period, as Casey, making his first career start, scampered on a 44-yard touchdown run. His run put the Gaiters on top, 16-11, for the first time in the game. A kickoff single by Kevin Simard (Chicoutimi, Que./Cégep Limoilou) and one on a missed field goal by Saumure rounded out the first half scoring, as the Gaiters took a 17-12 lead into the break.

The Gaiters extended their lead to 24-12 on their first drive of the second half, as Louis-Philippe Gregoire (/) scored on a two-yard run. The score was set up by an 81-yard pass from Casey to Nathan Walker (Brampton, Ont./St. Roch C.S.S.) on the play before. The Axemen responded on their next series, as Cody Cluett led Acadia on a seven-play, 73-yard drive, capped by a pass to Cordell Hastings, to cut the gap to 24-19. The Gaiters conceded a safety touch in the last minute of the third to take a three-point bulge into the final period.

Acadia started to take advantage of the wind midway through the final quarter, as Cluett led the Axemen on an eight-play, 62-yard drive. The Gaiters defence held, forcing Acadia into a game-tying field goal with 4:51 to go. After forcing Bishop’s into a two-and-out, the Axemen put together another six-play drive, this time capped by Saumure’s 21-yard game-winner.

The Axemen outgained Bishop’s 516-446, and made 31 first downs to the Gaiters’ 20. Flags were flying in the game, with Acadia being whistled 15 times for 122 yards, while Bishop’s took 19 penalties for 140 yards.

The Gaiters’ Casey finished with 301 yards passing, as he went 17-for-31 with an interception as he earned player of the game honours for Bishop’s. He was also the Gaiters’ leading rusher with seven carries for 72 yards. Walker had three catches for 115 yards, and finished with 224 all-purpose yards.

For Acadia, Wright took the MVP nod as he gained 188 yards on 30 carries, and ran for a touchdown. Cluett went 24-for-38 for 291 yards with a touchdown. Hastings finished with 112 receiving yards, while Eugene McMinns led Acadia with 211 all-purpose yards.

The Gaiters’ leading tackler was Callum Jasinski (/), who had 7.5 stops and broke up a pass. Arnaud Dandin (Paris, France/Cégep de Thetford) forced a fumble, which Liam Patton (Thornhill, Ont./) returned for 25 yards. Nicolas Caragenise had his first career interception.

The Axemen defence was led by Bailey Feltmate’s 8.5 tackles, while Matthew Nettle had 5.5 tackles and an interception.

Acadia (4-2) is back in action next week, when they host the StFX X-Men on Saturday afternoon. The Gaiters (1-5) will also hit the field next on Saturday, when they visit the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Halifax. Kickoff at Huskies Stadium is set for 2 p.m. (3 p.m. local time).

Laval (46), Sherbrooke (15)

With files from: Laval Rouget et Or

Université Laval, October 7, 2017 – The Rouge et Or won a solid contribution in all phases of play Saturday afternoon in Sherbrooke, on the way to a 46-15 win over the Vert & Or.

Laval (5-1) took advantage of two turnovers from Sherbrooke (1-5) early in the first quarter to score and never looked back. Christopher Amoah took the opportunity to experience his best game of the season with 180 yards in 21 goals, while Hugo Richard scored two touchdowns on the ground, including one on a 49-yard course. Antony Dufour for his part broke his own team mark of the longest return of boots of sending with the aid of a major of 104 yards.

“We wanted to restore balance in our attack and we did it today,” said Laval head coach Glen Constantin, referring to the 323 yards rushing. “Defensively, our unit gave only three points, the rest being safety touchdowns or from the special units. On this last point, we were somewhat dominated. We have scored a touchdown, but we still have things to work, “he added.

On TVA Sports, Christopher Amoah paid tribute to his teammates to explain his explosion. “When the offensive line is able to create holes for me to take, it’s sure it helps my day. Was he worried about the lukewarm performance of the ground attack since the start of the season? “Our goal is to move from one week to the next, as we did this week on the ground, to ultimately hit our peak at the right time. I think we are in the right direction right now, “said Amoah.

Laval started on a high note, Nicolas Viens recovering a fumble of Keith Sanscartier of the Vert & Or on the kick off. The Red and Gold capitalized on this turnover thanks to a 30-yard placement by David Côté. Sherbrooke gave the ball back to Laval on another turnover. The one who had caused the first man to escape, Dan Basambombo, recovered that of Gabriel Polan in the 19 of the Vert & Or. Laval needed only one game to find the zone of the goals, but it was all one. Hugo Richard made a side to Christian Dallaire, who spotted Alexandre Savard alone for the major. After processing, it was 10-0. David Côté added a second placement, 17 yards, before the end of the first quarter, which ended with a 13-0 lead for the Rouge et Or.

An advance that was accentuated from the first down of the second quarter. Hugo Richard scored 49 yards to score a touchdown and score 20-0. Sherbrooke eventually scored half-time in the engagement with 39 yards. Laval responded with David Côté’s third placing on 21 yards, before hitting a big shot with less than a minute to go. At the end of a sequence where Benoit Gagnon-Brousseau captured passes of 14 and 33 yards, Richard completed the work with his legs for his second major in the second quarter on a two-yard course. At the half, it was 30 to 3 in favor of the Red and Gold.

The Red and Gold did not lose any time after the break, Antony Dufour returning the kick off on 104 yards for the major. Dufour thus beat his own team record of the longest kickoff return, which was previously 102 yards. It was the most striking action of the third quarter, which was also punctuated by a safety touch on each side and a placement of the Vert & Or. At the dawn of the fourth quarter, it was 37-8 Laval.

After a safety touchdown from Vert & Or, who scored 39-8 at the start of the fourth, William Robitaille scored the day’s luck in the losers, a punt return of 86 yards for a touchdown. In the final minute of the game, rookie basketball player Luca Perrier came in to put the finishing touch with a major on a 15-yard run that made 46-15 Laval.

The Rouge et Or will now enjoy a week off, its second in the campaign, and will be able to fine-tune its preparation for the duel at the summit on Saturday, October 21 at 2 pm against the Montreal Carabins (4-0) at TELUS Stadium -Laval University. Tickets for this event, which is likely to be the first place in the RSEQ rankings, are available online or at the Rouge et Or box office at 418 656-FOOT (3668).

Carleton (14), Western (51)

Source: Western Mustangs

LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs have secured the top spot in the OUA once again, defeating the Carleton Ravens by a 51-14 score on Friday night at TD Stadium to guarantee a first place finish in the OUA standings.

“Good win, resilient win for our team,” said Mustangs head coach Greg Marshall. “I think it was a really good win to give our guys confidence. I knew our guys were confident going in, but they knew Carleton was a good football team.”

The win moves the Mustangs to 7-0 on the year, and secures home field advantage throughout the OUA playoffs, as well as a bye into the semifinals. Carleton falls to 2-4, and are tied for seventh place alongside the Queen’s Gaels.

Western put up 699 yards of offence in the win, utilizing a balanced attack that gained 336 yards through the air and another 363 on the ground, all while holding the Ravens to less than 400 total yards.

Three hundred of those passing yards came from Chris Merchant who completed 20 of 34 passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the victory.

Alex Taylor racked up his third consecutive 100+ yard game, rushing for 142 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown. He also caught four passes for 50 yards and one score.

Western’s other receiving touchdown came at the hands of Harry McMaster, who hauled in a 46-yard pass from Merchant on the Mustangs second drive of the game. McMaster finished with five catches and 114 yards to lead all players in both categories.

“I think the offence played great today,” said Cedric Joseph, who recorded two touchdowns and 81 rushing yards on 10 carries. “The offensive line had another great day, we did a good job establishing the run game, and I think it opened up the pass game pretty well to let Merchant and the receivers do their thing through the air.”

The Mustangs offence weren’t the only ones putting points on the board though, as Marc Liegghio continued his stellar season, going 5-5 on field goals to make it 18 consecutive attempts without a miss. Along with his impressive streak of success, Liegghio now holds the Western record for field goals in a season with 25 and is one off the U SPORTS mark established by Guelph’s Daniel Ferraro in 2014.

Defensively the Mustangs held a Ravens offence that had been averaging nearly 500 yards a game to just 358 yards. A key part of the defensive effort was stopping the Ravens vaunted rushing attack, with the Mustangs holding the OUA’s leading rusher Nathan Carter to a season-low 23 yards.

“We take a lot of pride [in stopping the run],” said Mustangs linebacker Jean-Gabriel Poulin, who led the Mustangs with 6.5 tackles and one sack. “Last week against Laurier they ran the ball a bit, so this week there was a lot of emphasis on making sure that they can’t do it anymore.”

Much like they had in each of their first six games, the Mustangs picked up points on their first drive of the night, with Joseph running it in from three yards out to give Western an early 7-0 lead.

The purple and white offence continued to roll on their next possession, with Merchant tossing a 46-yard pass to McMaster to extend the Mustangs lead to 14 points less than five minutes into the contest.

That score would remain the same until the early moments of the second quarter when Joseph finished off a six-play 63-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run. Just as they did in the first quarter the Mustangs added another seven points on their second drive of the frame, with Merchant finding Taylor on a 10-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-0 midway through the second quarter.

Despite the deficit, the Ravens continued to battle and responded with their first major of the day on their next possession, with quarterback Michael Arruda connecting with Kyle VanWynsberghe on a four-yard pass to cut the Western lead to 28-7.

Liegghio extended that lead to 31-7 on the final play of the half, hitting a 46-yard field goal to send the Mustangs into the locker room with a 28-point lead.

Western would go on to add another 19 points in the second half thanks to a one-yard touchdown run from Taylor and four field goals from Liegghio before the Ravens rounded out the game’s scoring on a 12-yard touchdown pass to Phil Iloki to make the final 51-14 in favour of the Mustangs.

With week seven of the schedule now behind them, Western now heads into a much-deserved bye week before taking on the Ottawa Gee-Gees during the final week of the regular season.

“I think the bye week is going to be really big for us, especially for people who are banged up a bit,” said Poulin. “It’s been a long stretch of seven games so I think having a week off like that is going to help us a lot.”

Game time for Western’s Homecoming contest is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, at TD Stadium. Fans can tune in live on Rogers Cable 13 and OUA.tv, or on Radio Western 94.9 FM and Newstalk 1290 CJBK with Tom McConnell and legendary Mustangs coach Larry Haylor calling all the action.

Waterloo (17), Queen’s (68)

KINGSTON, Ont. (October 5, 2017) – The Queen’s Gaels (2-4) crushed the Waterloo Warriors (4-3) in a 68-17 game that saw four touchdowns from Jake Puskas (Thunder Bay, Ont.) at Richardson Stadium on Thursday night in front of 3,109 fans.

GAME FLOW
Under a full moon and stadium lights, the Queen’s Gaels toppled the Waterloo Warriors 61-17 during the first-ever night game hosted at Richardson Stadium.

The Gaels defence came out flying against the Warriors, forcing a two-and-out to have Waterloo concede a safety and take an early 2-0 lead.

While the Gaels had an unfavourable field position on their five-yard line, it didn’t seem to matter as long as Puskas had the ball. The third year running back ran for 57 yards, bulldozing his way deep into Waterloo territory.

From there, the Gaels were able to get on the scoreboard when Nate Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont.) tossed the ball to an open Alex Zulys (Mississauga, Ont.) in the end zone for the first touchdown of the game. Nick Liberatore (Dartmouth, N.S.) secured the extra point to give Queen’s an early 9-0 lead.

It wasn’t long before the Queen’s Gaels were on the scoreboard again. This time, it was Chris Osei-Kusi (Brampton, Ont.) on the end of a Hobbs throw, who tore through the Warriors defence with a burst of unmatched speed to clinch his fifth touchdown of the season.

As the veteran Gaels defence stood their ground, Waterloo conceded another safety to make it 18-0 by the end of the first quarter.

The second frame saw more offensive pressure from the Gaels after another reception from Osei-Kusi put the Gaels within field goal range. Liberatore did not disappoint as he kicked a 22-yarder to push the score to 21-0.

The Gaels defence continued to shine as Cam Lawson (Caledon, Ont.) came up big, sacking Warriors quarterback Tre Ford.

Minutes later, the Gaels found themselves in good scoring position again. From the two-yard line, Marquis Richards (Brampton, Ont.) hammered forward for his first career U SPORTS touchdown.

The last possession before the final seconds of the half saw Jake Firlotte (Abbotsford, B.C.) make a substantial point-saving play, as he intercepted a Warriors receiver in the endzone.

Going into halftime up 28-3, Queen’s had standout performances from Puskas and Osei-Kusi, who combined for a total of 226 yards offensively.

The third frame saw the Warriors run their first touchdown into the Gaels end zone to climb 28-10. Queen’s responded soon after with a big reception from Matteo Del Brocco (Kingsville, Ont.) that left the Gaels on the two-yard line.

From there, Puskas was unstoppable as he bulldozed his way into his second career touchdown and boosted the score to a 25-point game at 35-10.

After Waterloo was able to get another score, the Gaels answered back with a big return from rookie Benjamin Arhen (Brampton, Ont.), followed with a 15-yard penalty from Waterloo to begin their drive in great position on the 52-yard line.

Driving forward, Hobbs found Puskas for his second touchdown of the game as he barreled through the black and yellow.

The fourth quarter saw Puskas add his third touchdown of the game, followed by a returned fumble for a touchdown from Wesley Mann (Almonte, Ont.). Puskas tacked on his fourth and final touchdown for a total of 175 rushing yards, and Jason Shamatutu (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) picked an interception to end the game 68-17 in the Gaels favour.

With back-to-back wins, Queen’s moves to 2-4 on the season.

BY THE NUMBERS
3 – Third straight 100+ yard game for running back Jake Puskas
5 – Five different Gaels with touchdowns during the game
2 – Sacks from Nelkas Kwemo
4 – A career-high four touchdowns for Puskas
379 – Passing yards from Nate Hobbs
6th – Sixth most points in a game in Gaels history with 68

FINAL SAY
“The offensive line is really starting to click perfectly, and we’re all happy about it. I’m very excited, but it wasn’t just me I have to hand it to the offensive line they played a hell of a game along with the quarterback and receivers.” – Jake Puskas

UP NEXT
The Gaels will return to Richardson Stadium for homecoming next Saturday, October 14 where Queen’s will host the York Lions in the last regular season home game of the 2017 season. Tickets are still available at www.gogaelsgo.com/tickets.

Laurier (53), York (31)

The York University Lions football team had top receiver Colton Hunchak in the line-up for the first time this season and his presence sparked the offence in a 53-31 loss to the No. 5 nationally-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks in their home season finale on Thursday night at Alumni Field.

Hunchak suffered an injury in the team’s pre-season game against Sherbrooke in mid August and returned on Thursday night to catch 14 balls for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Both of the scoring passes came from his older brother Brett Hunchak, who had his best game of the season going 34-of-49 for 388 yards and one interception. He also added another 50 yards on the ground on five carries and scored a rushing touchdown.

The Lions moved the ball all night, picking up 519 total yards on 75 offensive plays. The Golden Hawks, meanwhile, ran only 56 plays but averaged more than a first down per snap thanks to a number of big plays.

The defending champion Golden Hawks got off to a quick start in the first quarter and led 14-0 less than six minutes into the game. But the Lions settled down after that and slowed the Laurier offence while picking up yardage of their own. The Hunchak-to-Hunchak connection put the Lions on the scoreboard for the first time with 5:47 remaining in the second quarter, and Laurier carried a 22-7 advantage into halftime.

The Golden Hawks added to their lead on their first drive of the third quarter, but on the ensuing kick-off Kadeem Hemmings found some space and returned it 96 yards for the touchdown to cut the deficit to 29-14.

Kurleigh Gittens Jr. and Brentyn Hall each scored their second touchdown of the game early in the second half, but the Hunchak brothers both found the end zone to cut Laurier’s lead to 12 points at 36-24. However, that was as close as the Lions would get and the defending champions improved to 5-1 with the victory.

Daniel Bennett rounded out the scoring late in the contest with a 43-yard touchdown. York rookie kicker Dante Mastrogiuseppe and his Laurier counterpart, Nathan Mesher, also both kicked a field goal from 34 and 24 yards, respectively.

Gittens Jr. finished with eight catches for 210 yards, a whopping 26.3 yards-per-catch average. Starting quarterback Michael Knevel was 21-of-29 for 431 yards and five touchdowns.

Thursday’s game was the last of the season at home for the Lions, who will close the year with a pair of road games against the Queen’s Gaels and Windsor Lancers. Up first is a trip to Kingston, Ont., for the Queen’s Homecoming next Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1pm.
