U Sports Players of the Week (1): Ford, Ternowski, Leblanc, Breton-Robert honoured

Waterloo quarterback Tre Ford and receiver Tyler Ternowski, Mount Allison defensive back Skylar LeBlanc and Laval returner Vincent Breton-Robert are U SPORTS Football Players of the Week, for the period ending Aug. 26, 2018

It was no secret that the Waterloo Warriors offence would be good, but their on-field display in Week 1 was truly something to behold, sparked in large part by this week’s co-offensive players of the week – Tre Ford and Tyler Ternowski.

The dynamic duo was simply incredible against the Windsor Lancers and their numbers proved it. In only his eighth OUA game and first as a starter, Ford went 25-for-28 (89 per cent completion rate), with 463 passing yards and six touchdown passes. The six majors set an all-time Waterloo record and fell just two shy of the U SPORTS record. Ford also ran five times for 58 yards, which included a 20-yard TD run.

On the receiving end of many of Ford’s accurate tosses – 11 to be exact – was Ternowski. Among those 11 catches, the talented receiver hauled in four touchdown passes, including an 83-yard major. He would finish the night with 289 total receiving yards. Ternowski tied an all-time OUA record with his 4 TD receptions and came one short of equaling the U SPORTS record.

A fifth-year commerce student in his third year of eligibility, LeBlanc had an interception in Saturday’s 36-22 win over Bishop’s which he returned 52 yards for a touchdown. He also had 4.5 tackles (three solo and three assisted), including a tackle for loss in the win.

A rookie, Breton-Robert had a dream start to his university career on Friday night in Sherbrooke. The running back scored the game’s only touchdown, returning a punt on 72 yards into the opposite end zone. He gained 116 yards on eight returns and led his team with 63 running yards on 10 carries.
