U Sports players of the week (9): Henry, Barry, Mikoluff honoured

TORONTO (U Sports) – Alberta receiver Tylor Henry, McMaster defensive tackle Hassan Barry and Manitoba kicker Brad Mikoluff are the U Sports football players of the week for the period ending Oct. 23, 2016.

Henry, a fourth-year physical education and recreation student from Camrose, Alta., was honoured on offence thanks to his record-setting performance in a wild 67-59 seven-overtime loss to Manitoba last Saturday in Edmonton. The 5-foot-11 wideout opened the scoring nine minutes into the contest with an 11-yard touchdown catch and went on to have one of the most prolific games in U Sports football history, finishing with a mind-boggling 298 yards on 19 receptions, including seven catches for 106 yards during the shootout session. Henry’s 19 receptions tied the single-game U Sports record set in 2000 by former Laurier standout Andre Talbot, while his 298 yards through the air – a new school standard – rank second in Canada West annals and eighth on the all-time national list.

St. Francis Xavier running back Jordan Socholotiuk, Laval running back Sébastien Serré and Ottawa receiver Mitchell Baines were also up for the award.

Barry, a third-year political science major from St. George, Ont., took home the award on defence after he gave the nation’s top-ranked offence all it could handle in a heartbreaking 19-18 loss to Western last Saturday in London. The 6-foot-1, 325-pound junior was all over the field in the battle for first place in the OUA with 6.5 tackles, two sacks for a loss of 11 yards and a pair of forced fumbles, one of which he recovered. Thanks in large part to Barry’s stellar play, the No. 5-ranked Marauders held the No. 3 Mustangs to season lows in both points (19) and total offence (355 yards).

Mount Allison defensive back Nate Rostek, Montreal defensive back Samuel Drapeau and Manitoba linebacker Houston Rennie were also nominated.

Mikoluff, a first-year agriculture student from Beausejour, Man., was the choice on special teams for the second time this fall after he helped the Bisons keep their playoff hopes alive on Saturday. In the spectacular seven OT victory over Alberta, the 6-foot, 260-pound freshman accounted for 21 points as he was good on five of six field goal attempts (11, 36, 37, 18 and 21 yards), went 5-for-5 on converts and also added a single. Mikoluff sent the affair to extra time thanks to a 36-yard field goal on the final play of regulation and hit all three of his attempts in the shootout session, from 37, 18 and 21 yards out.

Kickers Ryan Lambert of Mount Allison, Findlay Brown of McGill and Marc Liegghio of Western were the other nominees.
