Week 3 AUS Football Players of the Week: Jack, Cius and McMinns honoured

(HALIFAX, N.S.) – Saint Mary’s Huskies receiver Archelaus Jack, along with defensive back Garvin Cius and wide receiver Eugene McMinns of the Acadia Axemen, have been selected as the Week 3 AUS football players of the week for their respective performances this past weekend.

Saint Mary’s Huskies receiver Archelaus Jack is the Atlantic University Sport football offensive player of the week for the week ending Sept. 10, 2017.

A first-year arts student from Toronto, Jack had seven receptions for 124 yards (the longest for 68 yards) and three touchdowns in the Huskies’ 40-21 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters Saturday in Lennoxville, Que.

After two games, he leads the conference in receiving, averaging 129.5 yards per game.

Acadia Axemen defensive back Garvin Cius has been named the AUS football defensive player of the week.

A fourth-year community development student from Malden, Massachusetts, Cius had a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown in Acadia’s 38-24 win over the StFX X-Men Saturday in Antigonish, N.S.

He also had 5.5 tackles (five solo and one assisted) in the win.

Acadia Axemen wide receiver Eugene McMinns has been named the AUS football special teams player of the week.

A second-year community development student from Nassau, Bahamas, McMinns had six punt returns for 189 yards in the Axemen victory over StFX Saturday. These included a 94-yard punt return for a touchdown.

McMinns also had three kickoff returns for 49 yards in the win, and added three receptions for 29 yards on offence for the Axemen.

Samuel Caron led his team to a huge 21-16 victory over the Université Laval Rouge et Or at the CEPSUM. The Carabins’ quarterback completed almost 70% of his passes (27-of-40) for 377 yards and a touchdown. Above all, Caron also had a string of crucial rushes for first downs late in the game to seal the win for the Carabins, amassing 42 yards on the ground including a rushing touchdown.

Highlights:
Findlay Brown kicked three field goals, including the winning tally on a 15-yarder with 26 seconds remaining as the visiting McGill Redmen rallied for an 18-16 road victory over Sherbrooke before 3,875 on Saturday. Brown, a Management sophomore, also connected on distances of 39 and 35 yards, respectively, to give his troops leads of 3-0 and 8-0 in the first and second quarters. He added a conversion to account for 10 of McGill’s 18 points. He also averaged 39.0 yards on seven punts and 49.2 yards on five kickoffs.

CWUAA POW: Siemens, Graham, Karl named

  • All three players return to the field on Saturday, as Saskatchewan travels to UBC (5 p.m. PDT), and Calgary takes on Manitoba (1 p.m. CDT).

EDMONTON – A pair of Canada West record book worthy performances and some special teams trickery highlight the Week 2 CW football players of the week.

Saskatchewan quarterback Kyle Siemens (offence), UBC linebacker Elliot Graham (defence), and Calgary holder Hunter Karl (special teams) were named winners Monday, as all three led their respective teams to victories, with Saskatchewan and Calgary improving to 2-0, while UBC evened their record at 1-1.

Siemens, Graham, and Karl will be back in action this weekend, as the conference returns to the field on Saturday with a pair of Canada West Football Showcase televised games, including Saskatchewan travelling to UBC to take on the Thunderbirds (5 p.m. PDT). Earlier in the day, Alberta (0-2) heads to Regina (1-1) to take on the Rams in the other Week 3 CW FB Showcase game (2 p.m. CST).

Those games can be seen on SaskTel (Saskatchewan), TELUS (Alberta and B.C.), and Bell MTS (Manitoba), while Calgary vs. Manitoba (Saturday, Sept. 16 – 1 p.m. CDT) can be viewed exclusively on Canada West TV.

Saskatchewan Huskies quarterback Kyle Siemens is the offensive player of the week after guiding his team to a 2-0 record, following a convincing 43-17 win over the Alberta Golden Bears at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.

Siemens led the way for the Huskies through the air, going 19-for-27 and 271 yards without an interception.

Among Siemens 19 completions were five touchdown passes – that’s the most by a Huskie quarterback in more than a decade and tied for second most all-time in a single game by a Saskatchewan pivot, behind only Brent Schneider. Schneider holds the CW record with eight touchdown passes in a single game, after setting the mark back on October 8, 1994 against UBC.

The defensive player of the week is UBC linebacker Elliot Graham, whose 107-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter helped lead the Thunderbirds to 32-18 home win over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday.

Graham’s interception return was the longest in UBC history and tied for second longest in Canada West history behind only Eric Duchene’s 109-yarder for Saskatchewan in 2001.

The Hamilton, Ont, product also added a pair of pass breakups in the victory and becomes the second consecutive rookie to win the CW defensive player of the week award this season after Regina’s Nick Cross won Week 1.

Hunter Karl did it all for the Dinos in their 46-26 win over the Regina Rams Friday.

In addition to his two offensive touchdowns and 131 receiving yards, Karl added a special teams major, as the third-year Arts Student helped cement Calgary’s win with a 17-yard fake field goal run to the end zone late in the fourth quarter.

Calgary’s leading receiver through two games with 248 yards, Karl executed the fake field goal to perfection, rolling to his left and beating the Rams to the front pylon for the major, which capped off the scoring for Calgary.

OUA Players of the Week:  Gordon, Messam, and Isenor

BURLINGTON, Ont. – The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Football Players of the Week for the period ending September 12, 2017.

OFFENCE: Levondre Gordon (Mississauga, Ont.) – 3rd yr – Laurier

Levondre Gordon came up big in the OUA Marquee Matchup of the Week, rushing for a career-high 208 yards in a 38-35 Golden Hawks victory over the Ravens.

The sociology major was part of a balanced Laurier attack that put up 576 yards on Carleton.  Gordon led the way with 208 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 27 carries.

The Mississauga native now leads the OUA with 140 rushing yards per game, while also being tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns.  He also sits third in the league in average yards per rush, at 6.7 per carry.

 

DEFENCE:  Isaiah Guzylak-Messam (Hamilton, Ont.)  – 4th year – Laurier

The fourth year defensive back is part of the ball-hawking secondary of the Golden Hawks defence .

In the OUA Marque Matchup of the Week, the Hamilton product played a key role, picking off Michael Arruda once, while also contributing four solo tackles, one assisted tackle, and three pass breakups.

Through two games this season, the Golden Hawks are allowing 340 yards per game, third-best in the OUA. Messam sits second on the team with 10 tackles.

The defending champions will look to go 3-0 when they head to Richardson Stadium Saturday afternoon to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks.

 

SPECIAL TEAMS: Ryan Isenor (Delhi, Ont.) – 1st year. – Guelph

Ryan Isenor demonstrated flashes of speed and shiftiness in Guelph’s first two games this year, but against the Windsor Lancers, the first-year from Delhi, Ontario exploded.

The human kinetics major put on a display, returning a missed field goal 125-yards for a touchdown.  Isneor fielded a missed field goal attempt in the third quarter 15 yards inside his own endzone, before taking off down the left sideline.

No Lancer was able to touch him, as his 125-yard return was one of many highlights in a Gryphons 82-10 victory that put Guelph in the win column.

The Delhi native finished the contest with four punt returns for 222 yards, and three kickoff returns for 46 yards. He also hauled in a pair of passes for 26 yards.
