UBC Thunderbirds defense undergoes coaching overhaul

The University of British ColumbiaĀ  (UBC) Thunderbirds have been busy in the offseason with coaching changes.Ā  Jerome Erdman and Chris Hoople are no longer with the team as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach respectively.

“We have made a change with our Defensive Coordinator and our Defensive Back Coach from last year,” commented Thunderbirds head coach Shawn Olson.Ā  “Both changes were difficult decisions as both coaches were intelligent, passionate members of our staff for the last three years and are good coaches.”

“We are looking to take our young developing defense to a dominating level and I felt that a new voice and direction was needed.”

Olson added that the defensive coordinator position was posted yesterday and will remain open for nine days.Ā  After the closing date, the list of candidates will be shortlisted and those on the list will be interviewed.

“My intention is to find the most dynamic and intelligent full time candidate from across the continent, with the intention of having someone hired and in place by early March,” explained the Thunderbirds head coach.

While the search is ongoing for the defensive coordinator position, Frantz Clarkson has been hired as the defensive backs coach.Ā  He comes to the Thunderbirds from the University of Alberta Golden Bears football program.

“Coach Clarkson brings an impressive resume, communications skills and an outstanding knowledge of both the position and the Canada West,” said Olson of the addition to the coaching staff. “I am very excited about his addition to the UBC Football Family.”

Ultimately, the Thunderbirds hope to reverse their fortunes on the field.Ā  The team had aĀ 2-6 record in the 2012 CWUAA season and missed the playoffs.
