Upstart Gryphons host Warriors this Saturday in Home Opener – Alumni Stadium Grand Re-Opening

The Guelph Gryphons (1-1) will play their first home game of 2012 on the school’s new FieldTurf at Alumni Stadium in Guelph against the Waterloo Warriors (0-2) on Saturday, September 15 at 1:00 p.m.

The game will be streamed LIVE via SSN Canada and live stats will be available starting at 1 p.m.

The first 1,900 students will get in free and adult tickets are available online here.

Guelph notched its first win of 2012 with a 28-9 victory over Windsor last weekend.  Quarterback Jazz Lindsey (Markham, Ont.) passed for 217 yards and a major while runningback Rob Farquharson (Niagara Falls, Ont.) rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown. Middle linebacker John Rush (Niagara Falls, Ont.) collected nine tackles and was named the OUA defensive player of the week.

The Warriors (0-2) enter the game following a 68-21 loss to the McMaster Marauders.

The Gryphons defeated the Warriors last season at Warrior Field in a convincing 65-13 final.  The Gryphons hold a slight upper hand in the last ten years over the Warriors with a 6-4 head-to-head record.

Sophomore quarterback Jazz Lindsey will look to junior running back Farquarson and senior receiver Dillion Dimitroff (Burlington, Ont.) to lead Guelph’s offence on Saturday after the trio helped lead the offensive attack in Windsor.

The Gryphon defence has played outstanding in both starts this season and held Windsor’s Austin Kennedy, to just 244 yards passing with no scores, and the Lancers as a whole to 111 yards rushing and only three field goals.

An area of concern again that was prevalent last week for the Gryphons were penalties. The Gryphons were undisciplined with 11 penalties for 110 yards and lead the league in total penalties with 254 penalty yards.

When the Warriors hit the field, it will be familiar territory for their starting quarterback Jamie Cook who transferred from Guelph after two seasons with the team.  Another familiar face will be third-year wide receiver Nick Anapolsky, who transferred from Waterloo to Guelph and played for the Gryphons in 2010 then returned to Waterloo. The Warriors have built some depth with their veterans including three returning starters that participated in the East-West Bowl in Anapolsky, offensive lineman Matt Vonk and defensive lineman Djordje Gavrilovic.

Tickets for Saturday’s game are available online for adults at gryphons.ca.  The first 1,900 students get in free. All tickets are general admission, the hill will not be available for seating due to construction and fans will be permitted only in the grand stands.

Homecoming tickets (September 22 vs. Toronto) will be on sale for students on Wednesday, September 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gryphon Field House (limit 4 per person, cash only).  Adult tickets for homecoming will be on sale online at gryphons.ca on Wednesday, September 13that 11:00 a.m.
