Uttley: Inside look at recruiting and scholarships in U Sports

There are two old sayings that best describe the importance of recruiting in university football: β€œThere is no such thing as a great college coach, only a great recruiter”, and β€œIt’s not about the x’s and the o’s, it’s about the Jim’s and the Joe’s”; which means it’s not about schemes, it’s about athletes.

During my 20 years in U Sports, 5 as a player and 15 as a coach, I have seen the evolution of both U Sports and the recruiting process. When I first started as a coach, recruiting would start in September and end in March. Today, the recruiting process lasts 12 months of the year. When you finish one recruiting class, you have already begun the next year’s class. The major parts of recruiting are;
