Valkyries explode out of gate, to finals

The Saskatoon Valkyries are heading to the WWCFL finals after eliminating their provincial rivals, the Regina Riot, on Sunday afternoon, taking the Prairie Conference championship title.

The Valkyries dominated the first half of the game, shutting down the Riot and scoring 41 points. Β The Riot did come back after halftime, scoring 20 points in the third quarter and another 7 in the fourth. Β The 55 – 27 final score ended the Riots season. Β The Valkyries go for their third straight championship having held that title for the last two years, beating out the Edmonton Storm in 2011 and the Lethbridge Steel in 2012.

Julene Friesen had a 25 yard run to open the scoring for the Valkyries. Β Each of the Valkyries’ next two possessions were one play touchdowns. Β Julie David scampered 95 yards for a TD on the first and Friesen ran 65 yards for a major on the second. Β The fourth possession saw a 4-yard touchdown run by quarterback Candace Bloomquist. Rienna Rueve’s fourth convert made it 28-0 after the first quarter. Β The Valkyries kept building on their lead in the first half, getting second quarter touchdowns from David and Friesen to lead 41-0 at halftime.

The Valkyries now go for their third straight WWCFL title Sunday, when they face the Western Conference-champion Lethbridge Steel in the final. Game time at Mosaic Stadium is 1 p.m.
