Vandals hope to stay perfect

It may be early, but the Lloydminster Vandals could be facing their toughest test of the season.

Coming off a 2-0 start to the season, the Vandals must now head deep into enemy territory as they visit the Calgary Wolfpack ā€“ a team they’ve never beaten, and the same team that knocked them out of the Alberta Football League playoffs last season.

“This is a huge game for us, we definitely want to go in and beat them so we can show it to ourselves that we can,” said linebacker Matt Fisher. “If we meet them in the playoffs we won’t have to beat them there for the first time.”

The Wolfpack sit atop the AFL standings as they also sport a perfect 2-0 record, and they have been running up the scoreboard as well ā€“ scoring 109 points in their two games. To say the Vandals’ defence has to be on its game would be an understatement.

The Vandals’ defence did get some good practice this past weekend, as the team earned a gritty 10-3 win over the Calgary Gators ā€“ and did so in dramatic fashion. With the Vandals down 3-0 at halftime, they came out and played a perfect second half and rallied to the win off of a Jared Valleau quarterback sneak.

“It was huge to get the win. Going in there we knew the Gators always play us tough in Calgary ā€¦ and that was a big stepping stone for this week coming up,” said Fisher. “One field goal against us, and it was a long field goal too, so we had the chance to get the shutout but we’ll definitely take the win only giving up three points.”

The Vandals head to Calgary tomorrow, with the opening kick-off going at 4 p.m. at Hellard Field Shouldice Park.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
