The Ontario Varsity Football League playoffs begin for two Cambridge teams this weekend, as both the Jr. and peewee Lions play at Jacob Hespeler Secondary School against the Mississauga Warriors.
Friday night the 7-1 Jr. Lions, led by Under 18 Football Canada Cup Most Valuable Offensive Player Tyler Varga, kick-off the Adams division Semi-final at 8:00.

Defensively the Lions, led by Football Canada Cup all-star player Peter Grey, allowed only 103 points against.
Varga is just returned from National Under Classmen Ultimate 100 Camp in Oklahoma. He is excited about the chance to lead his team to a championship and cement his position as a NCAA top 15 running back recruit. Varga has had interest from Harvard, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, Indiana, Buffalo, Michigan and Akron as well as all the major Canadian schools.
Fans of American Collegiate Football should come Friday night and see one of the NCAA’s future stars up close.
On Saturday Night the peewee Lions and Mississauga play their Adams Conference semi-final.
The peewee’s were west Division Champions and earned a first round bye with a 31-14 win over the Pickering Dolphins in Pickering.
The Lions were led by quarterback Austin Gordon, who set OVFL records for quarterback rating (154.7) and pass percentage (58.5) this season. Austin was once again on his game against Pickering, completing 64% of his passes going 9 for 14.
Defensively, the Lions have only allowed 79 points all season. Against Pickering, Mark Ehrenfellner had two interceptions, while Drew Walden and Wyatt Hogan-Crawford kept the Lions from moving the ball.
The games are free to Cambridge Football players and children. Adults $5.00.

TYLER VARGA:

Cambridge Lions own Tyler Varga was named the Under 18 Football Canada Cup Most Valuable Offensive Player from the tournament that ended recently in Wolfville, N.S.

Immediately following the Canada Cup Tyler Varga was off to Oklahoma for the NUC, (National Under Classmen) Ultimate 100 Camp. This camp brings together the Top 15 recruits for each positional group across North America.

With all his individual success, when asked his favourite football memory, “winning my only championship in grade ten at Cameron Heights Collegiate.”

As good as he is on the field; he is just as strong in the classroom with a 90% average. According to Tyler, he sees “football as a bonus, it is school that is going to take me places”. He is interested in medicine and becoming a doctor once his playing days are done.

He credits both his parents for all his success both on and off the field and I “look to my dad as my mentor and role model”. All the Canadian universities have shown an interest in Tyler (which is not surprising) along with the following NCAA schools; Harvard, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, Indiana, Buffalo, Michigan, Akron. He credits Simon Lazanja, over the last couple of months for getting the NCAA schools to startshowing an interest in his abilities.

Following his performance at the Canada Cup and the NUC camp more offers are expected to roll in from the NCAA and Canadian Universities.
