Varsity Blues host Warriors in final game of season

The Varsity Blues football team closes out their 2011 campaign this Saturday, October 22 and look to do so in fine fashion when they host the Waterloo Warriors at Varsity Centre.

U of T will be honouring their graduating players in a special pre-game presentation, while also hosting an Intramural Showcase and celebrating long-time fan and supporter Betty Murphy. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.

The game will be streamed live on SSN Canada through varsityblues.ca. Advance tickets are on sale: click here or call 416-946-3811.

Despite a valiant effort, a 21-9 loss to the No. 1 Western Mustangs knocked the Blues out of playoff contention last Saturday. Toronto started the season 2-1 with wins at York and versus Guelph, but have lost four straight heading into this week’s match-up.

“Playoffs were the goal,” said Varsity Blues head coach Greg Gary. “But just because we are out, doesn’t mean we don’t have a game to win. There are a lot of guys who will be playing in their last university game, so I’m expecting some great things Saturday afternoon.”

Blues quarterback Andrew Gillis became only the sixth Blues pivot to surpass 4,000 career passing yards last week. Gillis has thrown for 1562 yards this year and will be gunning to better those career-best numbers in his final game in the Blue and White.

Fifth-year veteran Michael Prempeh has also saved his best season for last. The Mississauga, Ont., native has 345 receiving yards, while sophomore standout Alex Pierzchalski has nearly doubled his 2010 numbers with a team-leading 408 yards so far this season.

Fourth-year linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza leads the OUA for the second consecutive season with 44 solo tackles in seven games. The Mississauga, Ont., native, along with fourth-year transfer Dorian Munroe, have been a key contributors to Toronto’s defensive corps, which has been ranked among the top three teams in the OUA all season.

Waterloo has struggled in 2011, going 0-7, while being outscored 290-67. The Warriors do however rank above Toronto offensively, averaging 329 yards per game, compared to U of T’s 304.

They are led by fifth-year receiver Dustin Zender, who is ranked third in the OUA with 729 yards and four TDs.
