Varsity Stamps head to semi finals

The Burlington Varsity Stampeders finished off the regular season with a hard fought 28-14 road win over the Toronto Jr. Argonauts on Sunday. Burlington ended the season with a 7-1 record and are scheduled to play the Sudbury Gladiators in the semi-final at home.

Evan Short started the scoring with a field goal which was set up by an interception by Randy Williams. Ryan DiRisio scored the first of two touchdowns, putting the Stamps up by ten at the end of the first quarter. Both teams scored in the second quarter, Burlington aided by a Will Finch to Ian Stewart passing touchdown, and a Jeremy Boschler interception, as Burlington took a 17-7 lead to the locker room.

The Stampeders added a field goal and single point, in a ragged, penalty-filled third quarter. The defence aided by a strong pass rush and an interception by Ashton Beaudry and Boschler’s second interception, stymied the Argo attempts to come back. Toronto scored in the fourth quarter to pull within seven, but the Stamps held on and added a second DiRisio TD to close out the scoring. DiRisio tallied 180 rushing yards on the day as the Stamps offensive line continued to run and pass block at a high level. Tanner Care (seven tackles) and Alex Dragojlov (six tackles) led the defence.

Head coach Neil Lumsden stated “It was a great effort today. We have tons of talent and tons of will, and we need to continue to work hard to reach our goal of winning a championship.”

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
