Canadian football?
Wanted: Opponents for a high school football team with 400 students. No seniors or juniors.
It’s an ad certain to draw attention if you’re smelling an easy victory. For South Gibson County coach Scott Stidham, it got him an opponent he could never have imagined.
The Hornets, located in Medina, Tenn., about 15 minutes north of Jackson, had their first varsity home game Friday, beating the Tartans of Wallaceburg, Ontario, 17-14.
That’s right, Ontario. As in Canada.
“We were contacted by over 40 schools, but of course none were from around here because their schedules were full,” said Stidham after his school, which opened in 2009, turned to the Internet in an effort to help round out its schedule.
“We gave them every reason in the world not to come. We couldn’t pay for the trip. They raised their own money.”
Stidham said the Tartans, who are located about 11/2 hours from Detroit, have played many American teams and were eager for a longer trip. They arrived in Jackson by bus on Friday, stopping in Dayton, Ohio, and Cookeville, Tenn., along the way.
“Our marching band played ‘O Canada’ (and) each team ran out onto the field holding the flag of their country,” Stidham said. “They had no connection (to Tennessee) whatsoever. It’s probably one of those things that never would have happened before the Internet.”
