Walter Dinos’ new TD king

CALGARY – While Aaron Ifield was busy putting everyone on the edge of their seats Saturday with his quest for the CIS all-time field goal record, University of Calgary running back Matt Walter was quietly breaking a record of his own.

Walter’s second touchdown of Saturday afternoon’s 37-5 Dinos win over the Alberta Golden Bears was the 30th of his four-year career, making him just the 33rd player in CIS history to score 30 touchdowns. It also moved him into top spot on the University of Calgary’s all-time touchdowns list, one ahead of both Dave Brown (1985-89) and J.P. Izquierdo (1987-90).

The fourth-year grad of Bishop O’Byrne High School came into the final game of the 2010 regular season with 28, tied with Hec Crighton winner Don Blair on the all-time list. In the opening quarter, Walter scored his first major of the day on a one-yard plunge into the end zone to put the Dinos up 9-0 He then added a receiving touchdown just after the three minute warning in the second quarter, hauling in an Erik Glavic pass from one yard out to set a new school mark.

He moves into fifth place on the Canada West list, tied with Saskatchewan’s Terry Eisler (1985-89) and one back of UBC’s Akbal Singh (1996-99) for fourth.

Walter, a first-team All-Canadian in the 2009 season, will close in on another school record early next season. With the 2010 campaign in the books, he is just 312 yards behind Elio Geremia (1983-87) for Calgary’s all-time rushing yards record.

The Dinos (6-2) are the second seed in the 2010 Canada West playoffs and will host the Regina Rams (5-3) in one of two semi-final games next Saturday, Nov. 6 at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m., live on Shaw TV and [url]www.qr77.com.
