Wanderers at the top of the MFL

The second week of Maritime Football action saw the Saint John Wanderers defeat the Moncton Mustangs. The P.E.I. Privateers got their first victory since being out of the league last season over the Capital Area Gladiators.

The first game of weekend had the Saint John Wanderers hosting the Moncton Mustangs. The Wanderers defeated the Mustangs 40-7 to move to sole possession of first place.Ā The Mustangs drop to 1-1 and will host the Privateers next weekend

The second game of the weekend, the Privateers returned to their winning ways. The game was close all the way through and with under a minute left in the game, Quarterback Chris Mutch kicked the single point to put the Privateers up 21-20.

The Gladiators took an early 7-0 lead after kicking an onside kick on the opening kickoff. Three plays later the Gladiators scored and then the Privateers got touchdowns from Dave Clark on a catch over the middle, runningback Steve Corcoran on an 8 yard draw, Jeff Hillier took a pass 65 yards for the touchdown.

A lightning delay halted the game for 30 minutes. After the delay the Gladiators tied the game up with just over 2 minutes remaining in the game.Ā The Privateers then drove down the field and kicked the game winning rougeand watched their defense come up big and stop the Gladiators on the final drive of the game.

ā€œLeading up to the game we wanted to make sure we were firing on all cylinders and we wanted to make sure our guys were ready to bang heads,ā€ said Chris Mutch.

ā€œThe Gladiators lost last week and we wanted to get on them early and put them away.ā€

The Gladiators kept it close and used the lightning delay to regain some momentum. After the Gladiators tied it up with under 3 minutes remaining, Chris Mutch and Privateers marched down the field and kicked a single point to win it.

The Halifax Shockers will play the Capital Area Gladiators this weekend at Scotia Bank Park North at 4:00pm.

After a disappointing loss to the Wanderers in week one, the Shockers had the week to off to work on things. Head Coach Dan Campbell believes the team just needs to keep working on the things they know how to do and get better at that.

ā€œWe didnā€™t dwell on the loss to Saint John this week,ā€ said Campbell. ā€œWe are just looking forward to the rest of the season and emphasized with the guys to get better at what we know how to do offensive and defensively.ā€

ā€œWe arenā€™t going to change anything. We donā€™t worry so much about the other team as we do understanding and executing our own systems.ā€

The Shockers take on the Capital Area Gladiators at 4:00pm this Saturday at Scotia Bank Park North in Fredericton.

In the other game, the PEI Privateers travel to Rocky Stone field to play the Moncton Mustangs at 4:00pm on Saturday.

The Saint John Wanderers are on their bye week as they get ready for the Privateers next weekend.
