Warriors football ‘making tremendous progress’

Warriors add three Ontario commits to their 2019 class.

Steven Guenette, a defensive back from Holy Names Catholic High School, wants to make the most of his university experience with the University of Waterloo Warriors.

Defensive lineman Thomas Bloomfield from Jacob Hespeler Secondary School and CFC100 linebacker Jethro Oleko from Football North Clarkson will also be joining the Warriors.

FPC Steven Guenette

An honour roll student, Steven Guenette understands the importance of academics. “The school itself is very prestigious and well-known for its high academic standards, which is very important to me,” he said. He will be majoring in economics and hopes to minor in psychology. He is also looking into doing a co-op.

On the football front, Guenette said he chose the Warriors because of the coaching staff “who almost feels like family to me…the coaching staff is amazing. They are super friendly and understanding.”

Guenette, who is 6’0, 175lbs, has had previous experience with Kyle Cole, the Warriors defensive and special teams assistant. He added that “Head Coach Bertoia and Coach DA have shown a lot of interest in me, which made the school and program shine above the rest…the football program has been making tremendous progress in the last few years and I want to be a part of the future of Waterloo football. I plan on making an impact.”

The product of Windsor, Ontario, has had a longstanding career. He played five years with the Essex Ravens (OPFL) and five with the Holy Names Knights (WECSSAA). He was a WECSSAA champion and defensive MVP in 2015. The following year he was recognized as being the “most dedicated.” In 2017, he was an OFSAA champion, received a coaches’ award and was named to the 1st-Team All-City. He helped the Knights capture a second OFSAA title in 2018. He has also participated in the Fox 40 Prospect Challenge.

Guenette’s decision wasn’t a quick one. “My family and I discussed all of my possible options for a very long time,” he said. “(We) finally came to the conclusion that Waterloo was the best for me both as a student and as an athlete.”

Thomas Bloomfield

Thomas Bloomfield is from Cambridge, Ontario, where he played with the Jacob Hespeler Hawks (WCSSAA). His primary position is defensive tackle.

CFC100 Jethro Oleko

Jethro Oleko is a member of Football North Clarkson, which plays their games against American opponents. Hailing from Windsor, he is a former member of the L’Essor Aigles (WECSSAA). He also plays for the Essex Ravens. He is 5’11, 190lbs.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
