Waterloo Warriors grow by two more

Warriors welcome two southern Ontario commits to their Class of 2017.

Omar Pusey, a linebacker from the Clarke Road Secondary School and Donovan Vanegas, a linebacker from AN Myer Secondary School, have a lot in common, they play the same positions, they’re from southern Ontario and they both now play for the Waterloo Warriors.

When it comes to sports, finding a school with great amenities is important. Omar Pusey found such a school in Waterloo. “I love the facilities that are accessible to the athletes and students,” he said. “I loved the atmosphere of everything from the campus to how well the coaching staff was to me when I was there.”

The 5’11, 200lbs multi-sport athlete also hoped that he has left a good impression on his new coaches. “The coaching staff at Waterloo is great. I feel like I have made a great bond with Coach Darrell Adams and LB coach Conway. Head coach Chris Bertoia is great,” he said.

The dual linebacker and fullback is currently interested in both the Sports Business and Recreation and Leisure program. He has played for five years and spent his high school career with the Clarke Road Trojans (Thames Valley Regional Athletics) in his hometown of London, Ontario. In grade ten, he was named as the offensive player of the year. In 2016, he was his team’s defensive MVP and a TVRA Darnell Division all-star. Along with his football prowess, he has a second-degree blackbelt in taekwondo and aikedo.

Like his London-counterpart, Donovan Vanegas, who also plays linebacker and fullback, was impressed with the school’s facilities. He is interested in Kinesiology and he said that the school is great academically.

But, Vanegas is on a particular kind of mission when he reaches the Waterloo campus. “They are also in a rebuilding process and I want to be apart of that process and help turn the program around,” he said.

He certainly isn’t the only Warrior ready for change. “They have an amazing coaching staff, all very knowledgeable and they all want to win, and most of the coaches will be there for majority of my career there,” he said.

Standing at 6’2, 235lbs, he has played with the A.N. Myers Marauders (Niagara Region High School Athletic Association), the Niagara Generals (OFL) and the Niagara Spears (OVFL) in his hometown of Niagara Falls, Ontario. In 2013, he won the Junior Metrobowl and was the game’s MVP. He also has three consecutive OFSAA bowl wins from 2014 to 2016.
