Week 6 AUS Football Players of the Week: Skibin, Wade and Lauther honoured


October 18, 2011 (HALIFAX, N.S.) – Running back Zack Skibin and defensive back Cam Wade of the Acadia Axemen, along with Brett Lauther of the Saint Mary’s Huskies have been selected as the AUS Football Players of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

Running back Zack Skibin of the Acadia Axemen is the Atlantic University Sport Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending October 16th, 2011. Skibin, a second-year player from Edmonton, Alta., scored his first career touchdown and also rushed for a career-high 170 yards on 21 carries in Saturday’s 40-10 homecoming victory over the Mount Allison Mounties. Zack also added one reception for nine yards in the win. Skibin’s 170 rushing yards were the highest single-game total by an Axemen running back in over six years. Mike Gillen ran for 186 yards in a 23-14 loss to the StFX X-Men on October 8th, 2005.

For the second consecutive week, Acadia defensive back Cameron Wade is the Atlantic University Sport Defensive Player of the Week for the week. Wade, a third-year defensive back from Moncton, N.B., recorded 10.0 tackles, including one tackle for a loss and a forced fumble this past weekend in a 40-10 homecoming win over the Mount Allison Mounties. His 10.0 tackles in the victory were a single-game high this season in the conference. Wade, a 2010 AUS all-star defensive back, has 29.0 tackles this season, ranking him third among AUS defensive backs.

Special Teams Player of the Week

Truro, N.S.

Punter and place kicker Brett Lauther of the CIS No. 7-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies is the Atlantic University Sport Special Teams Player of the Week. Lauther, a second-year student from Truro, N.S., scored 13 of SMU’s 37 points in a 37-18 road win over the StFX X-Men this past weekend in Antigonish, N.S. Brett booted two field goals, including a career-high 50-yard kick late in the second half, and added two kickoff singles and four PAT’s in the win. Lauther also averaged 32.2 yards on eight punts and 70.8 yards on six kickoffs. His 50-yard field goal ties him for fourth all-time in conference history for the longest field goal made.
