WHSFL Senior Bowl PREVIEW: Competitive fires ignited for players, coaches

This weekend, the Winnipeg High School Football League (WHSFL) Senior Bowl will be taking place for the best graduating high school football players in the province.

The two teams that will be competing against each other are team Krochak River East and team Krochak Maples. These teams are named Krochak in honor of Doug and Walter Krochak who were instrumental in the growth of football in the city of Winnipeg.

In 2010, a committee was set up and organized to run the Senior Bowl. One of the goals was to combine the Senior Bowl game with the history of the WHSFL. Each year, the teams that will compete against each other will named after past players who were inducted into the WHSFL Hall of Fame.

At yesterday’s press conference, it was evident that neither coach wants to lose this game. The Krochaks are very passionate about what they do. When addressing his team, Walter Krochak gave one order to his troops.

“Get ready to do business,” said Krochak.

The best line from the day came from Manitoba Bisons assistant coach Chris Clement.

“We will win by one hundred,” said Clement.

Being able to participate in the Senior Bowl is a significant accomplishment for the players. Team Maples Gregoire Mivelaz is one of those players and is looking forward to one thing this weekend.

“The level of competition, playing against the best players from this year,” added Mivelaz.

The new coaches participating in the Senior Bowl also also benefitting from a valuable experience.  Jh Qhin Swan of Team River East was excited to be getting new coaches and learning more about the game.

“It’s a good felling/honor to be looked at as one of the well rounded players on the team,” said Swan of his selection to the team.

This year’s game will be played on May 23rd at Eastside Field with a 1:00PM kickoff.

In preparation for the game, practices are being held May 20th starting at 7 p.m also at Eastside.

Advocating for football prospects one story at a time.
